Mazinger was my first mecha and first anime. Hope these faggots don't fuck it up.
WHERE'S THE SHIN MAZINGER SEQUEL
FUCK THIS REBOOT SHIT
GET IMAGAWA BACK
I wished the whole thing was 2d animated, but the problem is... I don't think Toei has anyone skilled in 2d mecha animation, and in recent years, they've been working hard on cgi.
Mazinkaiser SKL under Actas looked fucking good.
>>158525136
It's not only a reboot, but actually a sequel to the original trilogy. It's not Mazinger, it's Toeizinger. They're not the same.
>>158525169
Toei Robo Girls looked good though.
>>158525260
Robot Girls Z was that girls, and they were shorts.
Animating mecha is another skill.
>>158525169
>Mazinkaiser SKL under Actas looked fucking good.
Unfortunately, it had some of the least impressive fights ever seen in a mecha anime. Impressive how they managed to make something so badass as SKL be so boring.
>a sequel to the original trilogy.
Trilogy as in Mazinger -> Great -> Kaiser? This is a sequel to Mazinkaiser? Weird, but interesting.
>>158525169
>It's not only a reboot, but actually a sequel to the original trilogy. It's not Mazinger, it's Toeizinger. They're not the same.
Well that's generally the way to go. Sequel that mysteriously seemed to resemble the original show is easier to swallow for old fans than "your old show is obsolete and is now replaced!"
>>158525061
That's one half-decent drawing and it's still not that good.
>>158525096
A TV series with more complicated robot designs resorting to shortcuts has no relation to what a feature film could be capable of doing.
>>158525298
I liked SKL fights and the ova in general.
>>158525298
Forget what I said. What I meant is sequel to Mazinger Z. Apparently this new movie takes place like 10 years or more after the events of the original. I don't know if that includes Great Mazinger and Grendizer in that time period. Kaiser is in another continuity entirely.
>>158525303
Shin Mazinger wasn't a Mazinger reboot anyway. It had some backlash from old Mazinfags, but even the staff said they were'nt rebooting Mazinger Z. In fact, the whole project was supposed to be adapting Nagai's 1999 Z Mazinger manga originally.
>>158525319
You can stop being a contrarian now. There is nothing wrong with the character designs.
>>158524098

>>158525451
I'm not being a contrarian, I genuinely don't like the character art that we've seen for this film. Why do you think that's so hard to believe?
>Not Z-Hen sequel
What's the point.
>>158524098
I tried getting into mazinger but what turned me off was how they are always fighting the same goddamn villains every time, I am not familiar with old style mecha but I guess you're just suppose to enjoy seeing the same baddies get destroyed over and over again?
>>158525558
Did you watch Shin Mazinger, Mazinkaiser and Mazinkaiser SKL?
Did you try Robot Girls Z?
>>158525558
There's no reason to change perfection.
>>158525551
>Why do you think that's so hard to believe?
Are you a Toei Mazinfag or not? Because if you are, the original character designs for the TV show weren't that great. These new ones are clearly an update on those.
Meanwhile Shin Mazinger and Mazinkaiser were an update on the manga designs.
>>158524098
>screaming chuuni manchildren on cgi robots
No thanks. I'll have my Okada hand-drawn Gundam.
>>158525303
Actually, the original show-like shots are probably just the movie's opening sequence or flashbacks. For example, they show Mazinger Z launching from the old tv lab, but then there's also this cut to a completely new one. There's a shot of a significantly older professor Yumi and Sayaka seems to be wearing a lab coat.
Also, there's what looks like some kind of GM (mass produced friendly design) Mazinger at the end of the trailer, alongside another new silhouette.
>>158525735
>>158525725
>Gundam
>>158525376
Great Mazinger happens right after original.
>>158525376
>In fact, the whole project was supposed to be adapting Nagai's 1999 Z Mazinger manga originally.
Well, it did exactly that in some way.
>>158525787
It only used some elements from it like Zeus etc. The plot was mostly based on the original manga, and Ken Ishikawa's relic of terror, with some cameos from Violence Jack and other Nagai works sprinkled all over the place.
>>158525787
Yes, but I don't know how much they plan to focus on Great Mazinger and possibly Grendizer for this movie.
It might be a Saint Seiya movie clusterfuck if they decide to shoehorn in Great and Gren into the plot.
>>158524830
Mazinger's design is the most basic bitch super robot you can get, it being iconic doesn't change that. But you're probably a goddamned spic so talking to you is a waste of time.
>mecha

>>158525787
>>158525826
Actually, Shin Mazinger is a chop suey of a few Mazinger series, not a mirror adaptation of the original, pre-Toei influence manga. It's a combination of ideas from God Mazinger, Original Mazinger manga (again, before Toei pushed Nagai to change the tone so as to the first TV series), and Mazinkaiser, as far as I know, with cameos from other series as the anon mentioned.

Story here :
It has been 10 years since then. Humanity awaits a new fate.
Once humanity was on the verge of destruction at the hands of the evil scientist Dr. Hell and his underground empire. Kōji Kabuto, his Mazinger Z super robot, and his friends at the photon power laboratory put an end to Dr. Hell's evil ambitions, and returned peace to the world.
It has been 10 years since then. Kōji has followed his father and grandfather and now walks the path of a scientist. He encounters a mysterious life form buried in a giant structure buried deep below Mt. Fuji. A new encounter, a new threat, and a new fate await humanity. And Kōji, who was once a hero, makes a decision for the future.
It can be a god or a demon.
Once again the future is entrusted to Mazinger Z.

>(again, before Toei pushed Nagai to change the tone so as to the first TV series)
Nah, the tv series' tone was pretty close to the manga's in Mazinger's case. It's just the direction itself was weird, often hurting the serious scenes. There were goofy as shit scenes right next to people getting blown up in dramatic episodes. It also takes much longer to get to more serious climatic battles since the anime itself is much longer. But even anime original one shot stories also could get rather dark, like episode 67, and, for example, although the Lorelei adaptation doesn't use iconic shots from the manga and changes designs for no reason, the plot outline is mostly the same.
The "tone" of the manga changes later because it moves to a different anime promotional magazine, and so the chapters published there are basically just one shot fillers featuring new robots and characters that already were introduced by the anime. It's clear Go Nagai just wasn't putting effort into those chapters.
When it goes into Great Mazinger, which is the actual continuation of the Shounen Jump Mazinger Z chapters, it goes right back to the previous style.

It isn't really a choice, because TTGL did nothing new, but just compiled a bunch of super mecha tropes with making up a story on the go and not thinking things through. It was meant to be a fanservice for mechafans and it is the only thing it is. Literally GaoGaiGar of its time.

You are one of those little shits who thought that Madoka was a good mahou shoujo anime, that revitalized the genre and a masterpiece, right?
>>158543393
Madoka was decent, but overrated, and it certainly didn't revitalize the Mahou Shoujo genre because it barely had anything to do with it. You cannot compare it to Mazinger Z, one of the fathers of mecha and a theme-definer. Nice try though, smartass.
>>158543557
>and it certainly didn't revitalize the Mahou Shoujo genre because it barely had anything to do with it
Considering Cutey Honey is the root of superheroine mahou shoujo subgenre, which got really popular with Sailor Moon, it didn't really deviate from the genre at all.
>You cannot compare it to Mazinger Z, one of the fathers of mecha and a theme-definer.
But I can compare it with the adaptation that was made years after by completly different people and has a completly different tone. I liked some stuff and references, but it really didn't need to turn Mazinger Z into Getter Demonbane.
As a Go Nagai fan, I can find things to enjoy in it, but it isn't a defining Mazinger Z story and I hope it will never be seen like it.
>>158543393
It also has a pretty basic hero's journey/coming of age story that avoids the episodic structure of many other mecha shows, which is why it attracted an audience beyond the shows that were directly referenced by it.
>>158525061
Except for Boss they look weird in that style.
>>158538131
>>158539105
It'd be amusing to see some version of Mazinger with Toei Sayaka and some Rei clone thrown in.
I don't think this is what's going on here though, since Sayaka was really all dere by the end even in the Toei anime (which is the only version of the story where she often antagonized Kouji) and this is taking place years later, so it'd be odd if she suddenly was less mature than before.
>>158544130
>Considering Cutey Honey is the root of superheroine mahou shoujo subgenre, which got really popular with Sailor Moon, it didn't really deviate from the genre at all.
I highly doubt you've watched a few, if any, mahou shoujo series to not consider Madoka a complete deviation from the genre. It shares no elements with it besides flashy outfits and young girls being given magical powers by a random alien critter, all of which, while common themes, are HARDLY what the genre is centered on. The reason why idiots say it saved Mahou Shoujo is because they never watched/heard of anything beyond Sailor Meme at best.
>But I can compare it with the adaptation that was made years after by completly different people and has a completly different tone. To segue off of my reply to your comment about Madoka and the Mahou Shoujo genr, this is why your comparison was not apt. Shin Mazinger ZERO retained many aspects from the original manga and added on to it. It showed what would happen if Mazinger were to become a "devil", which was one of the things Go Nagai wanted to focus on, he wanted to emphasize that Mazinger is in the end, a mere machine, and it could be used to destroy the world to the same degree it can be used to save it, hence why the pilot needs a strong moral compass to use it properly, and this is where Koji needs to grow up from a punk rascal to a man with just conviction, something which Nagai also wanted to show in the original manga. This is what made the time loop mechanic interesting, we see that Koji has already developed a moral compass and understands how Mazinger should be handled from all the time loops he experienced, it was ingrained into him, but even then there's a shadow of doubt, he is not perfect (1/2)
>>158545095
>>158544386
(2/2) He is not perfect, and power can corrupt, so his moral standing can slip from time to time. I especially liked it in the beginning of the story where he tries to come up with a justification to abuse Mazinger's power, said justification being the supposed protection of the people, but he was just mad with power (this is not simply a moral thing as well, this version of Mazinger has a maddening effect on its pilot mentality, but Koji is not completely innocent either, it's a combination of both). Again, this further adds on Go Nagai's themes in the original manga, it did it justice and handled it well. Then we start with the arc where Koji has to grow up as a just man again and rediscover his moral compass. The story, I strongly believe, is at the very least QUITE close to what Go Nagai would have wanted for Mazinger. The "Getter Demonbane" stuff you talk about are not what defines the story, they're merely themes to spice up the setting. The core story has been maintained, built on, and taken into a more modern approach/direction. Shin Mazinger ZERO is not a masterpiece, but is it a great "reboot"? Does it do the Mazinger series justice? ABSOLUTELY. It's great for a modern audience, but does not detract from the original feel of the works.

>I highly doubt you've watched a few, if any, mahou shoujo series to not consider Madoka a complete deviation from the genre.
Well, I watched Doremi, Sailor Moon, Cutey Honey, Precure, Tokyo Mew Mew, Shugo Chara and Nanoha and is perfectly aware about most other shows, like magical idol series or stuff about magical critters like Jewelpet. I can tell difference between shoujo and shounen mahou shoujo and that superheroine variant is just a subgenre. But Madoka didn't offer anything really new to the genre - similar stuff was already explored before. And considering that this subgenre is located borderline with japanese superhero shows and Madoka's plot a rip-off of one popular tokusatsu shows, which Urobuchi likes so much he wrote a season for it, I don't see how it deviates from already established variants.
>>158545540
About Mazinger Zero:
Honestly, we already seen a Devil Mazinger and it's capabilities. While those moments weren't on a such huge scope, they shown a point very well.
But further exploring it? That I believe is a job for an elseworld. A short series about a possibility, that fully embraces the demon that is Mazinger. Like the first loop we saw, only a bit longer and without time resets.
Core Mazinger story should be about hope and have mostly a lighthearted tone, with ocassional tragedies, not a constantly bittersweet one.
>>158545095
>I highly doubt you've watched a few, if any, mahou shoujo series to not consider Madoka a complete deviation from the genre. Mazingerfags will always have superior taste, that's a written rule in mecha fandom, your pleb taste, gundams, evangelions, and childish newshits can't compete.
Fuck off newshits, liking Madhouse and Bones, most of their best animators are freelancers, and they have inferior mech animators.
Toei can bring their veterans with Obari in it, if Toei doesn't shit on the budget.

Mazinger saved mecha in 1972, and it will do so again. Cry more Pablo.

Wouldnt Pablo LOVE Mazinger? Whats with your post?

>what is atom and tetsujin 28 and plenty of other obscure mecha of the 50s and 60s
When I was a kid, I watched a lot of Atom and read manga with robots. I told myself that when I became big, I would draw robots. But I didn't want to copy Osamu Tezuka. To be accepted in the robot artist circle, I had to do something new. It was both a challenge and out of respect for my masters.
When I started working on the concept, the pre-publication manga magazines didn't want anymore stories with robots. I wasn't welcomed, only if I presented an animation project. So I first worked on the anime in collaboration with Toei. We were about to sign for the TV. But here, the condition was that the magazine accepted to publish the manga. So I stopped manga that I was drawing at the time to dedicate myself to Mazinger. My editor in chief wasn't happy, but I convinced him to accept this new project.

Well I say mecha as in piloted robot. Tetsujin and Atom are pretty different altogether.
>>158556716
Then you're wrong because mecha encompasses Tetsujin and Atom.
Mazinger literally saved the genre and made it popular again. After 20 years of mecha, beginning in the 1950s, people were bored and tired of mecha.

Well, sorry anon.
God bless Nagai anyway.
>>158556752
This. Mazinger is a hero of mecha, it saved it once already, and it can save it again, but I doubt this is the film that will save mecha, unless they put more effort into it, and the trailer we saw is not the finished product, but I highly doubt that as well.
It will be difficult to surpass the greatness of Robot Girls Z. I wish they would do another season.

It looks super interesting.
Name ONE mecha show where the CG was actually good.
My expectations are pretty low for this.
>>158558519
What's wrong with the cg here? I mean, the redesign is not great, but the actual cg is good. The action is particularly great, and don't have the awkwardness of some other cg i've seen from production ig for example

Boss is the only character that's not shit because he looks the closest to his old design. Everyone else has lame 'serious anime' designs.

>>158525658
Actually the best drawings in Shin and Kaiser were the ones that looked the most like the manga designs.
>>158525881
Mazinger is a fantastic design. It's basically a really clever robot version of Mao Dante and had a clear thematic idea & purpose behind it. Toei making it a colorful baby toy doesn't make the original Nagai design less good.

>I mean, the redesign is not great
The design is actually the best part because it goes back to the manga-style design that was slimmer and more demonic, a big influence on the Eva units
The actual mecha CG is fine but having 3D models over 2D backgrounds looks odd
The humans except Boss are dog shit
