We did it in the 8th grade here in Canadaland.

We did a practice session learning paces and to use a compass properly one afternoon on school property, and then the next week we went on a field trip and did orientation innawoods.

I thought this is something all kids did. It was part of gym class for some reason.

And it's common in real life, we did it all the time
