Anti-heros/rivals are fun to watch when you can see them slowly converting to allies and being unable to control thier softer side. Inuyasha on the other hand really didn't change much as a character after he got the Tetsuiga.

They learned the truth about that day and how Naraku pitted them against each other.

Their feelings hadn't changed, both InuYasha and Kikyo still loved eachother but Kikyo distanced herself from InuYasha and Kagome to find Naraku on her own. There was early tension between the two of them about when she sealed him, but once she learned the truth things calmed between them.

The only reason Kagome was able to get together with InuYasha was because Kikyo eventually did die for good. Because of that InuYasha was finally able to move on from her and commit himself to Kagome properly without hesitating due to his feelings for Kikyo.

Can't find the whole thing, but Sesshomaru goes to his dad's grave to "ask" for advice on how he asked Inuyasha's mom to be with him since she's a human and he ends up whispering something in Rin's ear that only she can understand for some reason as he says it very quickly. Kagome recorded it somehow and they play it really slow to hear what he says to her. He pretty much tells her to take her time with discovering her finding her feelings for him as he doesn't want to rush her etc. so it's like a proposal as Kagome thinks. Inuyasha was the manifestation of a clumsy, stupid brute, while Sesshomaru was the smart and elegant fighter.

At the beginning, both their personalities were childish, but Sesshomaru matured faster than Inuyasha (he mellows the fuck out pretty much as soon as he starts traveling with Rin and becomes an obvious tsundere) and was a much more likable character. Not to mention, Sesshomaru walked alone and NO ONE dares to fuck with him for most of the series, the one picking the fights is always Sesshomaru until almost the end. Meanwhile, Inuyasha and crew work as a team and still barely survive getting caught up in various events and schemes.

Inuyasha is the hero of the RPG, while Sesshomaru is the NG+ bonus boss walking around doing whatever the fuck he wants.

It's not uncommon than some other character is more popular than the MC.
That is because, anime MCs (especially in shonen) are often annoying, ugly, weak, mentally challenged, or several or all of these at once.
Inuyasha isn't weak, but he's annoying, gay and stupid.
Sesshomaru is calm, intelligent, attractive and strong.

Should I read the manga or watch the anime to experience it now?

As somebody who used to like Inuyasha a little too much when I was 12, I can explain everything wrong with the fandom and why certain characters get popular.

Sources: Several regretful years of watching Inuyasha and discussing it with other dumb weebs, writing fanfiction which led to being suicidal in later years, etc.

Inuyasha is an anime written by a woman, and is therefore automatically meant to have the female lead as a self insert for female readers/viewers.

Sesshomaru is the "elegant, royal, pretty boy" character. He's written to be flawless except for his "cold personality", which is offset by him taking care of a little girl. The "Cold rich badboy with a heart of gold" trope. The majority of women are automatically attracted to this.

Inuyasha is written to be the lovesick puppy, the bumbling idiot that the self insert has to "take care of". This trope is essentially the "fixer upper" thing that women seem to like, there's some guy that's really rude and not the brightest, but still really attractive, and after they remove all scraps of his original personality and turn him into something they actually want, he could be good. Not a very common choice because it requires effort on the self insert's part, and we all know women hate effort.

Kouga is the typical loud, boisterous guy that swoops in and tries to woo the self insert through a show of physical prowess, "Look at me I'm stronger than that loser" kind of jock behavior. Women love when men fight over them, perfect for the self insert.

Out of all of these, the rich flawless guy with a heart of gold is always the most popular.

From being part of the fanfiction community when I was younger, I can definitely tell you the popularity of the male characters basically went like this.

Sesshomaru > Inuyasha = Kouga > Naraku > Side characters and OC DONUT STEEL

Inuyasha is only as high as he is because he was the main male character, he'd have been lower if he wasn't.

I don't know why people refer to him as such a powerful being. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru seem way stronger than he was. He may have been able to defeat early versions of Naraku but I'd say after Naraku created a demon that could shatter the tetsuiga, he probably wouldn't stand much of a chance.

Naraku wasn't very powerful, in the end he's just a shit tier half-breed. He mostly had bullshit level regeneration and some stolen gimmicks, nothing more.

Sesshoumaru was way stronger than Naraku but his sword also directly countered Naraku's regeneration shit. He was also said to have surpassed his dad after getting said sword. The question is really whether anyone has a way of beating Naraku's regeneration, not if they're stronger.

Read the manga and watch the EDs, also maybe play some OST while reading. The manga is more tight in story and does not suffer from fillers, so it's considerably easier to bear with. The art is pretty good after the first chapters (though at the last ones it becomes more sterile due to Takahashi changing her art) and characters are better portrayed in the manga, for example, Kikyo comes across as more emo in the anime than she is in the manga and also Kagome is less insufferable, the amount of ,,sit" are also pretty low. The anime has some good animated episodes, particulary the ones done by KyotoAnimation, so maybe check some of those out too.

Then misunderstandings about Inuyasha never proposing to Kagome happen and everyone (Rin included) end up teleporting to the grave and crushing it. Sesshoumaru, who was there asking his father what to say, wants to fight Inuyasha for the insolence. But Rin proposes to resolve it all with a tongue-twister contest. Sesshoumaru whispers something really quickly and wins. Later, Kagome says she recorded it and when they listen to it, it sounds like a proposal.

Sesshomaru was just better. Near the end, he had an not unlike the wind tunnel, but it became sloppy seconds for Inuyasha. He replaced it with some propagating wave of utter destruction, which actually wrecks Naraku. Bees are never a factor with him.
