This show opened up my horizons a bit. Trailer and announcements were nothing to write home about, but actually watching it made me realize anything can be hype as fuck when done correctly. Especially the puppet show.

I still remember that magical moment when I picked up this series. A friend of mine and I were sitting on his couch looking for new anime to watch and pick this because of the title but we never knew it was a puppet show until a couple minutes in. I thought it was honestly going to be CG garbage and then my mind was blown. This was undoubtedly the best show of 2016.

And as a guy that has a huge hard-on for puppets and real life and has a pretty decent collection of marionettes the show was instantly favorited.

It gets WAY better in the latter episodes too.
One of the best thing about this show for me is the ideological differences between Shoufukan, vapeduck, Phoenix killer and b10guy on how they view swords and combat. It's something I never cared for in battle anime/manga but here it's oddly compelling.

I have no idea which direction they're taking for S2, hopefully it's as focused as S1.

That's the result of Urobuchi being the producer and main creative force, he can do whatever he wants, his personal projects are all personal and unique. After he became famous for Madoka, he's now always hired to make things dark and subversive like Madoka.
When he was hired to write Madoka, Iwakami told him to make it dark like Fate/zero. If it was up to him, god knows what he would have written, but I bet it wouldn't have been as popular.

For example, he was hired for Expelled from paradise before Madoka and it shows. Still the usual Urobuchi worldview but tone is balanced and fun.

For online streaming (BiliBili and iQiyi) they only used the Jap dub. The Hokkien dub was only used for the physical DVD release that Pili sells. Aside from some clips here and there, I didn't find any complete rips.

Most Taiwanese fans preferred the jap dub, anyways.

Urobuchi was half finished with writing a spinoff with Pili characters and setting (Something like Fate/Zero) but they realized the lore and setting are too complex with a lot of history, people who weren't familiar with Pili would be confused.
The solution was to make a baby's first Pili show, Urobuchi then decided on a traditional fantasy story, something everyone is familiar with and can be used as a vehicle not only to introduce Taiwanese puppetry but also to be a 101 on wuxia and its tropes. Stuff like puppets teleporting everywhere was explained in TBF as a technique, while anybody who watched Pili knows that shit happens a 100 times per episode, it didn't need explaining.
