It has a lot of that business about it that makes the events seem very real, like there are a lot of non-sequiturs and things that seem like they're going somewhere but really don't that give it the ring of verisimilitude. There are also a lot of little moments and details that make it feel very real, like him getting the gift crab, and then getting more crab in the restaurant, or like when they buy the expensive sushi and it's good but not great and they can't stop laughing about it.

Let's put it this way: either it really is based on true events or the guy who posted the threads is a genius at making a real-seeming story.
