It is not by any means or form a masterpiece, but alongside Konosuba I feel both set the bar of what an Isekai should aim to at least be somewhat interesting. Konosuba very fanservicing to the point watching it with other people can get awkward but the characters are fun to watch, the hijinks are nice and the whole thing actually feels like both a parody of isekais and a work that's actually getting some effort put. I feel like Aqua, Megumin and Darkness are a good "foil" for Kazuma's seriousness, if not for the lack of better words. Re:Zero has its flaws but overall his MC is very realistic There's a shitton of people like Subaru IRL, specially in the states. and how he spergs and reacts which in other works would've made him the "hero" here the way he carries himself actually matters and every choice he makes can decide some very fucking important things. Rem is pretty waifubaiting yes but that doesn't mean that her interactions with other characters aren't bad, and Otto and Reinhard are pretty interesting. I feel like Emilia should've been dealt much sooner as she DOES look like she has the potential for a pretty hype character growth guided by Subaru or heck, maybe have non-potato Rem help level up Emilia's. I mean, who here doesn't like when Ram and Rem bantz Subaru back into shape, Subaru being a bully to Otto and even the possibility of Betelgeuse being more prominent in Subaru's mind alongside with the possibility of Subaru going full dark lord. As I repeat, by no means both works are this "amazing LN that everybody MUST like" but at least I feel that most LN authors should put at least as much work into their novels as Konosuba's and Re:Zero's.
