I feel bad for Madoka. One of the most genki female pilots with enthusiastic school spirit is forgotten because of the misleading and boring plotline.

I miss this show. It had a really nice atmosphere and a bunch of fun characters (not Muginami). I wouldn't mind getting an OVA or something for this show.

Boring plot.
Enjoyable cast.
Great OPs and EDs.
Amazing soundtrack.

I could probably write a whole essay about the main 3 characters and how they play off each other.

One of the big themes was the traditional theme of willpower/self-identity, but it's somewhat unusual for anime that the main character is the most lost of all of them. She's drifting in life, while Lan, though naive, is solidly centered on her duty as princess, and Mugi's fluffy exterior belies the iron will beneath it - she just does whatever she thinks is best at the time, no matter what that may be.

It's precisely 50% yuri SOL and 50% drama/mecha, take that as you will. S1 is a masterpiece.

The director is great too, Pilot's Love Song was not that great story-wise but it was an adaptation. I especially love the close-ups on faces.

First season was when the whole Rinne plot was still minor and most of the focus was geared towards building the characters. Second season seemed like it was going to explore further in both categories, but the direction seemed lost and did not seem to understand it much either.

Half or more of s2 was about a character you'd only care about if you read the prequel manga for some reason. They also set up a "get the band back together" arc at the finale of s1 only to resolve it halfway through s2e2. Really a shame.
