/a/, how does it feel knowing that without learning Japanese there will be hundreds of manga you'll never read
>>
I'll translate Golgo 13 myself, some day.

Make no mistake; I have the power to make my dreams come true.
>>
>>158371781
It's fine I'll just wait until like 2040 when they invent competent universal translators and consume my taiwanese comics with that stuff.
>>
No one will ever read all manga
>>
>>158371781
Despair but also an erection

I just want to know how you can make a manga about baseball last over a 1,500~ chapters and still keep going
>>
>>158372097
>look into Dokaben on Wikipedia
>it's not even clear what the series is
That's how you know that the series is ancient but neverending.
>>
>>158371829
>As of April 2017, 184 volumes of the tankōbon
God speed then you and good luck
>>
>>158371781
Anon, there will be hundreds of manga I never read no matter what. Thousands, even.

>>158372097
It covers decades of their lives, as I understand it.
>>
>>158372586
Also, fun fact, the same guy has another 100+ volume baseball manga. https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=33858
>>
I do know japanese.

It's not that great, the majority of manga is shit unless you find something really obscure most of it is just some variation of an already popular series.

The japanese are just meaner too and 2ch has too many obscure memes for me to bother.
>>
>>158371781
Who says you have to know Japanese to read Japanese?
>>
i didn't even finish the chinese cartoon
i stopped during ongoing subs at the time though
>>
>>158371781
Relief, my backlog is long enough already.
>>
>>158371781
I'm fluent in English and there are hundreds of thousands of books I'll never read.

>>
>>158371781
I'm still trying to learn it. I just want to be able to read LNs one day. So much original content there.
>>
>>158371781
I'm ok with it, but sometimes I get a little sad when I think about all the great porn I'll never be able to read.
>>
>>158371781
Don't care, the amount of translated stuff is already overwhelming and the moon readers do a good job of filtering the shit out.
All you can miss out on this way is a niche stuff that you might be interested in but isn't popular enough to get a translation.
>>
>>158377176
Golgo isn't exactly niche, or unpopular.
>>
>>158373316
you don't

i dictionary crack several tankobon each month on the train. very enjoyable
>>
>>158371867
By 2025 you will just have to scan it and it will be auto translated.
>>
I have way more shit in my backlog than I will ever read, so I don't really care
>>
>>158371781
Eh, I'm working on Japanese but that'll probably never happen but within a few years it won't be hard to just get auto translations that are good enough
>>
>>158377176
Uh, how about no? Most of the important or popular stuff from the past will never get translated because nobody wants to put the work in so unless you can read Japanese, it will always be impossible for you to read up on the important series that in turn influenced all the others.

What gets translated is generally what takes the least amount of work.
>>
>>158371781
Even if they were all translated, chances are I still wouldn't read them.
>>
There is plenty of media I won't be able to consume, and not just because I don't know the language and can't understand it, but because there is simply far too much of it to try and experience it all in a single lifetime.
Best not to dwell on it or worry about it, there's no point.
>>
>>158371781
i want to read this but there is literally fuck all for Raw's anywhere on the internet and theres shit all actually TL'd.
The fuck if i'm buying nearly 200 volumes at 50$ a pop or some shit just for this, even if i really want to read it.
most of the other stuff in jap is fairly bad, but theres a few series i would read if i knew it. i would probably take up japo though if golgo actually was online and not in weeb hell.

Or you can just learn French. We get a whole bunch of series most of you have never even heard of.
>>
>>158371781
True for every language
>>
>>158379826
I'd rather kill myself than resort to using French for my entertainment needs.
>>
>>158379939
What did French ever do to you?
>>
>>158379803
I can read through about 50% of a given work without any assistance. So, the promised time slowly approaches.
>>
>>158380020
Fuck the French language and French people.
>>
>>158379881
No it isn't.
If I learn japanese I can read all the manga.
>>

I pray for you anon. I'll be waiting.

I'll just file that under 'My loss'.
>>
>>158371781
Good and bad
Good because there are SHITMETRICTONS of stuff I'm not even remotely interested in.
Bad because there are some things that I am truly interested in and will not be able to know how it ends.
Consolation prize: There is so much shit being made that most probably I will find something that will be translated and completed so we can read it.
>>
I've heard people say before that even after knowing Japanese for years it will still be hard to read most Japanese shits because of slang and all that other bullshit.
So hard that it will be more pain than enjoyment to even try and read it.
>>
>>158381373
isn't most LNs/mangas use high school level language?
>>
>>158379826
French translations are garbage.
>>
>>158381749
Care to give examples?
>>
>>158381373
BS. Japanese is a pretty dumbed down stone age level tier language. Even if you're stupid to not know kanji there's still furigana to help you.
>>
>>158381789
They can't even be called translations, they are just adaptations. The quality of the printing and paper is outstanding though, even better than the japs ones in some cases.
>>
>>158381373
Part of the thing is that you tend to learn slang while you learn the rest of the language, due to it being pervasive. You know, in the same way that ESLs often learn how to curse you out before they learn to deal with some of the rarer conjugations in English. It's very unlikely, I think, for you to *not* learn/figure out stupid stuff like ない=ねえ, 見るのか=みんか, and しょうがない=しゃあねえ while still 'learning' the language.

The one thing that absolutely will prove difficult and remain difficult throughout your learning and knowledge of Japanese (and probably what you're thinking of, as opposed to slang) is set phrases. It's not even funny how stupid they can be; most of them cannot actually be understood by context or knowledge of the literal meanings of the words. Some of them are even holdovers from when a verb in the phrase meant something else (these tend to be -ず ending verbs). You'll understand everything around the set phrases, and consequently hear something completely nonsensical like "Yeah, I don't know if I agree, but I suppose it's like they say: 'beating up an octopus without a blind woman's caress'!"

It's not possible for anyone to passively know all of these. But, on the same note, you will never know all of the possible set phrases in your native language either, so it's not something you should ever be concerned about.
>>
>>158381808
>there's still furigana to help you
If you're reading shounen, sure. If you're reading any other form of text but shounen manga, no.
>>
>>158381935
Again, any examples?
>>
>>158381991
I'm not gonna go through my collection just to post examples to please anon-sama in a weaboo fagotry forum.

>read a english translation
>read a french """oficial""" translation

>>
sad desu

I just can't learn Kanji, all the different readings, how they are used to form words, it's just too complicated for me
>>
>>158382072
Why do you assume that English translations are more accurate than French official translations? Maybe the English one is wrong, especially if it's a fan translation.
>>
>>158371781
I learned Japanese (got the N1 for what it's worth) but I don't really care about manga, I have read like 2 volumes in the past year.

Anything amazing and untranslated I am missing out?
>>
>>158371781
Feels good that I started decades ago so that I don't have that problem.

The real problem is that my fetishes are pretty niche even among the Japanese, so now I have to learn how to draw and create my own content, which will take me years more.
>>
>>158381373
>it will still be hard to read most Japanese shits because of slang and all that other bullshit.
lol no.
>>
>>158382110
After reading manga for more than 15 years you just know those things. I don't even need to know japanese to evaluate a translation.
>>
>>158382560
And yet you still won't give a single example.
>>
>>158382589
Not him. Blame. トア given as "Toha". French people are not people; fuck off with your stupid nationalistic horseshit.
