Think about it, if Escanor wasn't overpowered and didn't happen to be in the right places at the right time, all of the 7 deadly sins would've died horribly. I realize that artists want their character to have some kind of signature look, but after years of reading manga, it comes across as anything from laziness, carelessness to lack of confidence in their own character design, if they're afraid the character loses their style if their change their outfit.

What is Mel's long term goal? He's immortal but loses a bit of his emotions every time he dies so he's not in a hurry to do anything but doesn't have an infinite amount of time either. He'd been chilling with Elizabeth's reincarnations for like 3000 years but what else was he doing? Didn't seem like he was working on undoing his and/or Eli's curse and just prefers to keep everyone in the dark about everything.

He had to have known that either the demons or the goddesses would show up at some point to cause problems. He could have been proactive and assembled a team of warriors to take on the 10 commandments with plans and abilities to counter each individual commandment. Instead he gathers a handful of supposed criminals only like 2 of which were strong enough to really do anything and doesn't even bother telling them about the existence of the commandments let alone their abilities.

Imagine how easy it would have been to completely wreck the commandments if he had a strong druid open the seal slightly using a small amount of Eli's blood, have a bunch of magicians immediately teleport the currently weakened and confused commandments to different locations where they would end up fighting people who can counter their abilities, like Escanor for Estarossa or Merlin for Grayroad. The plan of course could have involved gathering entire armies to back them up and using spells to trap the commandments, giving Mel a beating so he can use revenge counter right off the bat, making sure it's daytime so Escanor can nuke his opponents easily, etc. He could've settled the entire war in an afternoon but instead it ballooned into something threatening all of Britannia. What an absolute fuckup.

Sooner or later something had to be done about the demons and goddesses as well as the curses on Mel and Eli. Instead he chose to wait until shit hit the fan until he finally got off his ass. I guess there could be a reason for this if for example the goddess clan coming back would somehow destroy the world so he chose to mope around to avoid further destruction, but seeing how they managed to push the commandments into a corner even without a plan I don't see how the goddesses could be such a threat especially if he made some preparations.

Probably looking for the actual reincarnation. Liz was probably the first he found. I mean now we know that Elizabeth dying doesn reincarnate her to a random location but redcuces her to a baby, it means he didn't know Liz's previous form. And so on. Also he was protecting the Dragon sword.

As long as he protects the sword, no. The strategy you described might work, but there are a few problems. How would he convince all the rulers of Brittannia to lend their army for this cause? How would he find people who could help him? Out of the fairies, we only have Dahlia, and then we got King. There might be some powerful giants, but they are not the cooperating type. And Escanor is the first human that could do some shit against a commandment. Merlin is there but that's it, not even Gowther. Also, what if it doesn't work? Ooops, I let the demons out and we couldn't beat them. Sorry, it's game over. It's safer to just protect the sword until the end.
