It was, but it didn't necessarily operate within the usual structures of comedy. I didn't think it was all that amazing when it started airing, until I embraced what the show was doing. Did you ever feel frustrated waiting for a punchline that never never came? Or did you ever feel like 'this is nice but the jokes aren't really all that hilarious'? Forget that shit, Nichijou plays by different rules most of the time. Instead it goes for meanings and moods that are more difficult to grasp and it handles them with impressive whimsy and grace. Try thinking about how it would make you feel if you got over your frustration - the surprising familiarity found in even the most absurd situations, the fleeting beauties of every human experience, portrayals of innocence and adolescence. And all of this brought to you with craftsmanship almost unparalleled in TV animation.

For me, Nichijou slipped up when it decided to become more plot driven in the second half. It was better when it was just a series of isolated skits.
Hakase was annoying on top of that.

Did it though? They did a couple of directly connected scenes and made Nano go to school to meet the other characters, but any kinds of larger scale narrative structures were only there to spice things up a little. I don't know how you could have possibly felt any drastic changes in the latter half.
And Hakase was pretty damn great in retrospect, even if you find her behavior immediately annoying. She's a smug kid that actually does some of the annoying shit that children do. However, that only plays towards the show's benefit when you get those sweet scenes that show the joys of family life.

While I like to put certain works on a pedestal at times, I think the concept of having a single favorite anime/manga to be too constricting. I love different anime/manga for different reasons, and in essence I'm arbitrarily ranking those reasons and it makes the ones that aren't on top to appear of lesser value even though it can fluctuate depending on mood and how long ago I watched it
tl;dr life is too complex to have a single favorite anime. Now that I think about it, a chart that expresses a hierarchy may be better.

That's understandable. Although a hierarchy chart may end up a complete cluster fuck and become difficult to organise considering that there may be a disproportionate number of anime you have a similar opinion of compared to ones which you have a high opinion of.
