Partially this, partially because humans are sort of wired to find it repulsive. They don't like seeing women or children killed or tortured, because as a species there are benefits to finding that behavior unacceptable. Rape is hard to write around Murder in a sense is cleaner than rape because at the very least the character is finished after the horrible things are done to her/ him but with rape (if you want to do it properly) you have this person that has to deal with all the shitty baggage that comes with the act. You end up with half a character and have to somehow convince the audience that it's still relevant.

I can't really articulate it well, but I think it's got something to do with murder being a direct outlet of violence, and a utilitarian one (if someone is a problem, you just get rid of them), whereas rape and sexual violence in general are more pleasure-based and show different aspects of the character doing it. Also, if this makes sense, characters die proudly all the time, but they very rarely get raped proudly; if your story ends with the MC being raped, that's most likely a full-on bad end, whereas MC dying can be a bittersweet or beautiful-tragic end, etc. The way it works thematically is just different, it's not really about the practical effects of it. Bullying's not really comparable to either rape or murder, honestly - there are exceptions, but it's usually an accumulation of separate acts over time that aren't all that awful on their own, and the bullies often don't understand the actual effect it can have. Yes, it can fuck people up, but it's a different kind of process.
