Is Japanese curry really all that good? This shit is referenced or eaten at least once in 99% or series. I imagine it must be different from the yellow Indian stuff which can be disgusting.
>>
>>158299564
It's not as spicy and greasy as Indian curry. Might be disappointing if you like your curry to pack a punch but the flavour is nice.
>>
>>158299564
It's very different from the yellow Indian stuff. It's more closer to cinnamon in aroma.
>>
>>158299564
Jap cuisine is a meme to be honest
>>
It's pretty good, but vastly inferior to Thai curry
>>
Japanese curry is the Maple & Brown Sugar of Oatmeal flavors. Nice and mellow, at least compared to normal curry.
>>
Its only popular since its easy to make, I think? Its less spicy compared to your indian/thai curry since it doesn't use a lot of spices or vegetables.
>>
>>158299564
It's no vindaloo.
>>
Its popular because its super simple and cheap to make. Its sweeter and less spicy than most other curry so its more popular with kids too.
>>
>>158302019
Thai curry is the best

Rogans diet is pretty disgusting and unappealing.
How about you eat carbs so it looks like food but with smaller portions?
>>
>>158302241
Its less spicy because it uses a roux as the base, and fats mask spicy.
Its only easy to make because there are hundreds of companies that sell prepared roux blocks, so all you need to do is cut up veg and meat, cook it, add water, boil, add roux blocks, and stir.

Japanese curry is pretty good.
It's more of a gravy than indian or thai curry.
If you buy some roux blocks, buy some spices to add to it. It's like bouillon, it's a base for making a dish, but not special on its own.
>>
>>158299564
So I had this stuff quite a few years back. It's fairly nice. It's not spicy at all. But it's nothing like actual Indian food. It's probably more akin to Strogonoff.

Japanese curry is more savory and is not spicy at all, which is good because it means you can actually taste it rather than having your tongue and sinuses overwhelmed by a fuckton of spices. The meat also is tasty and isn't dry as your grandma's pussy like how it is at most Indian restaurants. Honestly Japanese curry is much better than Indian curry imo. Thai curry is good too.

You go to smaller, family run places if you want to eat actual good food in good amounts.

>what is the lack of words in certain languages?
The English language is garbage for food and cooking, that's why you use French and Italian terms,

If you open the dumpling page you see chinese dumplings, which are made the same way as Tortellini or Ravioli but if you open the Italian page of those you will never find a similar term used for them. Why? Two reasons. First because they're a kind of pasta, not dumpling, second because you will simply refer to them with their names. Something English speaking people don't do because of their cronic ignorance about cooking. They prefer to call everything "dumpling" even when the ingredients, the way the dish is prepared and the cooking itself are different.
Just think about this for a second, you call Knödel and Tortellini the same.

>>158304241
Russo-Japanese War. Japan was the first Asian power to defeat an European one, so Europeans were awe-struck and horrified at the efficiency of Japanese martial arts. That's when the West's love affair with Asian martial arts started. By WW1, everyone had already do their armies Jiu Jitsu or Judo (It is often said that Judo was just called Jiu Jitsu back then, but if you look at the manuals from the time, it doesn't look like Judo as we know it today.).
Early 20th century up until WW1 is actually a pretty interesting time if you're into martial arts history. They loved style vs style fights. Wrestling vs Judo or Savate vs Boxing drew huge crowds.
Then WW1 came and people found out (like the Greeks and Romans) that regulated combat sports don't really help you in a real fight (See: The manga trope of sports martial arts vs REAL martial arts). For example, all Savate masters died in the trenches, so what he have now is reconstructed stuff from manuals and the memories of former Savate students.

Actually, the Japanese knew that they could only win in close combat, so they chose a theater where this was a possibility. The Russians having shit fencing and so-so bayonet techniques also helped.

In the end only people coming from cultures with a substandard cuisine would think Japanese food is good. Like North Europeans and Americans.

Sure, sushi can be good. You know why? Because the fish is good.
The real, good Japanese cuisine is Okinawa's, where it's been proved the old diet, together with the style of life, helped them live long and healthy lives. But then again Okinawa's cuisine is not famous for its sublime taste, just for its excellent nutritional supply.

I come from a place well known for longevity and it's often ascribed to our representative dishes, which are steamed and low in oil. Literally had yellow Thai curry for both lunch and supper yesterday from two different restaurants

If you get this stuff from a package, it's pretty terrible, and you need to add a lot of ginger and curry powder to make it palatable.
Properly done, Thai curry is 10/10

Japanese Curry isn't really that bad. It made me realize that onion and apples is a very good combo. It's much more subdued than the other curries.

I still have been shuffling through Japanese curry block brands, seeing what's good. Avoid the basic bitch brand you can now find at Walmart. There's a brand with similar packaging that's far better, but I cannot recall the names. Good luck.

Masala is just a spice mix:
Pepper, mace and/or coriander, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, bay leaves, and cumin

A Japanese curry block has:
Turmeric, Coriander, Fenugreek, Cumin, Orange Peel, Pepper, Chili Pepper, Cinnamon, Fennel, Ginger, Star Anise, Thyme, Bay Leaves, Cloves, Nutmeg, Sage, and Cardamom

It's just a variation on the classic masala mix, but pre measured in a roux block instead of a pre measured powder.

Spice, yeah.
Nips don't use spices, they use fucking sugar.
>>
>>158303292
They are when they overpower everything else in a dish.

Also, making extremely spicy Japanese style curry is a VERY bad idea.
The compounds that cause spicy flavors are fat soluble, and Japanese curry is a fat based roux sauce, so it neutralizes the spicy flavors unless you go crazy with it, in which case it will go into your intestine where the fat will be stripped from the compounds in digestion, and the remaining spicy will leave your body as a torrent of 5 alarm spicy shitwave.

Indian curries use sugar as well.

>"It is common to add a little sugar or jaggery to some of the sabzi/shaak and daal. The sweet flavour of these dishes is believed to neutralize the slightly salty taste of the water."

>Gujarati Potato Curry
(Bateta nu Shaak)

This is a decent example. At its core, it's spicy hashed meat with small pieces of mealy veg, offset with sweet raisins. It's made with a lot less liquid than the regular stuff, which is really just stew.

But the spicy-sweet contrast can be awesome. Like afghan rice.

Had Japanese curry for the first time last year right before going to work at New York Comic Con, though I had been meaning to do so for a while, since I knew that one of my friends works at Go Go Curry over by the Port Authority Bus Terminal. She said at she was gonna cosplay at work that day because of the con being a couple blocks away, so I went. It also happened to be a Go Go coupon day too, so there was that.

I can't handle spicy food at all, as I didn't grow up with it (Cantonese cuisine upbringing, they hold that the only reason you need to use heavy spices is to cover up the fact that your ingredients aren't fresh) though my family likes using chili oil at dim sum or on their noodles, I don't. Katsu curry there was just the right amount of spice and sweetness too. Been back a couple times now, and it was just as good and cheap as the last couple times I've been.

My cousin who went to NYU tells me that Go Go Curry isn't as good as other places in the East Village, but I haven't gone exploring his recommendations there yet. I really only go to Go Go because a friend works there, it's pretty out of my way. Maybe I should look into those other curry places next time I'm in the area.
