Some anon gave a quick rundown of his problems and differences between OVA and Manga, here's some of it:
- Cut some Major's dialogue in volume 4 to Integra also addresses Alucard's issues in a way (in fact, he flat out said he chooses to stay on Hellsing because of her - Which ties in with why he returned specifically to her bedchamber).
- Another significant cut was the one that alluded Alucard's goals and why Major said it was a rehearsal of the play that was staged 100 years ago. When Alucard returns to London, there's a drop text narrating how "once a vampire came to London to claim a woman he yearned for" and how his ship navigated the river full of corpses, surrounded by fog and had only one coffin. The text of the past overlapped with the present. Think about the ending again. Think about Major's words and what Alucard loses in every cycle.
- There's more emphasis in general that Alucard isn't quite aware of his own memories with added dialogue "Who is that?" Hirano explained in databook that because he absorbed so many lives, he began to lose his identity until Abraham's experiments allowed him to control himself and pieced himself up little by little. What he was afraid of wasn't living but living and "losing everything again", that's why he goes suicidal against Anderson because the war triggered his memories of not having nothing again and again. He lost it twice already because of war: his subjects, his castle, his lands, his name, and the woman he loved.

All these minor details were significant explain why Major committed a mistake, he let Seras and specially Integra live. It also cut Walter calling and reminding Integra Alucard was a monster when she didn't think so, in volume 3, that was another flag of how Walter dislikes Alucard while Integra's definition of what a monster or human was different.

Alucard was facing his 'death' and 'defeat' in previous instances, demoralized and alone. He had lost everything as the sun rises, or the ones he wanted had turned their backs at him. Mina wasn't into him. God didn't 'save' him. But in the third sunrise, Integra, his Master (who has a double role of the God he couldn't serve and the woman he's attracted to) was pleading for him to remain. That made all the difference and without the bonus that was cut it was badly done, because it doesn't make sense why Alucard returned. His goal wasn't to die in the first place. Keep in mind what he lost and what he returned to: England are fine, the mansion was rebuilt, his subjects Seras and Pip were 'alive', and Integra waited for him.

It was all about giving Dracula a happy ending. He used to awake in tears facing his memories, in the end he smiled and moved on to find peace.

Major couldn't really understand Alucard. Abraham did: he demoralized him, telling him he had nothing left and the Count crumbled. Alucard's work on sheer willpower. Major letting Integra watch this shit because muh art was the worst fucking thing he could have done. Alucard was engrossed with his inner sunrise flashback angst when he heard her desperate cries ordering him to stay and, for the first time, instead of crying to those memories of loss, Alucard smiled. Major thought wrongly Alucard gave up, when he actually had realized in that very moment that even if he couldn't be God's Servant or have Mina, he gained something more important. Integra, Hellsing, London, Seras+Pip, etc. Those are his world.

The fear of death is a pretty natural and necessary driving force for humans. Without it and the ability to die, a person can ride that immortaility high for a pretty long time. As we know though, higher highs lead to lower lows though. And with an eternity of living due to immortality, those lows, I imagine, can be pretty terrifying and fuck with someones mind pretty bad.

Alucard surviving in the ending was a fucking terrible decision.
He got everything he wanted, he died in a glorious battle against a human being, a weak man who didnt sell his soul and free will for power, and yet dared to try and defeat the monster that was alucard. A fitting end.
