To be honest, this isn't even that far fetched.

Remember, Kaworu easily gets close to Shinji because no one has ever loved him in a way he could return properly. For the first time in his life, Shinji had someone telling him he had worth as a person, and not just because he had to pilot his mother's robot corpse, or because he was just the right low age for a cougar, or the punching bag for a frustrated wreck of a little girl.

In the exact same way, Kaworu could have warped Asuka.
The girl who's constantly looking for validation, whose raison d'etre is showing she's on top and superior, but is actually a wreck who knows she is worthless deep down, and tries to hide it through exploits of talent and effort.
It would have been interesting to see how Kaworu could have exploited it.

And the moment of betrayal would have made Shinji's breakdown like a happy fun time, compared to the emotional murder it would have been on Asuka.
