When does it get good?

It always is, though volume 3 is when it goes off the meds.

I on volume two and I found the mysteries somehow lacking, in a way that if they were not written too much like an anime they could be interesting , but the fast paced development and lack of proper ambientation detract from it. Also the two sisters and the classmate are really boring with their mary-sue-like personality. The MC and his uncle are ok, but they feel like they're the same person. And the yokais hardly have screen-time. I actually skipped a few chapters that were not the MC's and didn't feel like I lost anything.

Most people seem to agree that Mai's chapters are generally weakest, but I've always liked the way Hayabusa and Enbi bounced off each other and they only got more entertaining as it went on. As for the mysteries I can't say much since I'm no mystery buff and they revolve a lot around Japanese myths, including wording, background and moral lessons and I'm not terribly familiar with those either. Volume 3 is the one where there's an actual mystery to solve that some people in the threads have taken as a challenge.

I went in hoping for a love story. I feel like I'm reading a lot of filler between it.

It's not focused as a love story at first, so it's built up mostly in the background but is still noticeable. Honestly I liked it like that since it avoids most of the pointlessly melodramatic shit that bogs down a lot of love stories. I also liked how there was romantic buildup for more than just Shinobu without it taking up too much of the story, I thought it hit a good balance.

Not the best place to look for something good.

Yeah I feel you. Maybe the problems boils down to too many japanese references in the mysteries. But can't really complain about that in a japanese series. I'll keep skipping Mai's chapters though.
>>158155837
Don't skip them, that's still pretty stupid especially since from now on the only parts she has are either part of a combined chapter or from a different character's perspective. She only has one chapter that's primarily focused on her left in vol 8 that gives a lot of important perspective on what's going on. Absolutely don't skip "her" chapter in volume 6 since it's about and from the perspective of (tied for) best boy.

Mai is the neccessary evil of the volumes. Without her, nothing gets revealed and the bad guys will keep on committing crimes afterward. Her part might be dry, but without her, the LN simply does not work.

That guy looks top tier, is he Illness Magic?
>>158156140
Yes, his story is part of the reason you shouldn't skip the Mai part of vol 2 since you get a little bit of him there and he bounces off Mai a lot better than the Sunekosuri.
>>158156258
To be fair, Illness Magic User is somewhat of a bullshit plot device. He just bullshits a new power to solve whatever problem he has. He's fun, but he's so damn generic.

>>158156391
Yeah, that's another problem. The LN suddely jumps in and out of genre faster than the eye can see. One second it' a mystery novel, the other is a full battle shounen with powerlevels and all.
>>158156657
It's a problem to some and a plus to others depending on how strong of a preference they have for specific genres. Kamachi in general is a bit of love it or hate it when it comes to his works.
