Here was a guy who shouldered the burden of the entire group. He sacrificed his own wellbeing and his own body to feed/arm his soldiers. Yet they keep him at arms length because his nature is that of a charismatic leader. Hence comes Gutts who treats him as equal, a friend, etc. Griffith's heart changes as a result of this friendship. When Gutts decides to leave, he couldn't figure out why Gutts would leave, after all, what more could Gutts want that Griffith couldn't provide. So Griffith falls into depression and loses his composure.

Finally after the torture, after realizing he's lost all he can offer to the world, his primal desire to simply regain that glory took root.

People who cannot realize this feeling do not understand the weight Griffith has to carry and had carried.

I believe the only thing Griffith can be blamed for are his deeds after becoming Femto, starting with the eclipse.
