In their first scene together Kaworu tells him to be aware of his position as a pilot, a rather rude thing to say, Misato said the same thing to Shinji in the beginning of the series and Shinji got angry at her in response.
However when Kaworu says it he just blushes and agrees. He sees Kaworu as his ideal and everything he wants to be.
It's because Kaworu is who he is that Shinji acts that way, he wouldn't act the same with anyone else even if they had been nice to him. Because Shinji sees Kaworu as another version of him. A perfect ideal version of himself.

He never raises his voice, he never speaks ill to him, even when he gives Shinji that advice he says it with a smile and a kind/soft voice. Rewatch the episode, from the very beginning Kaworu tells Shinji of his flaws. He tells him to be aware of his position as a pilot, tells him that he's going to be alone forever if he keeps running away from people, tells him to appreciate the fact that he has a home; a place to go back to.
Basically all things Misato and others have told him, but he never listened to them or worse, got angry at them.
He listens to Kaworu because he's already projected this idea that Kaworu is some sort of ideal God to him. From the minute he saw him.

Kaworu telling Shinji about his flaws and how to better himself, yet still loving/accepting him DESPITE that is everything Shinji needs to be a complete person.
It's the love that is normally given by the parents to a child, it's because Shinji never received that he's so broken and stunted in the first place.
Being told how to self-improve while still giving praise and love is the sure-fire best way to help someone like Shinji grow, which is exactly what Kaworu is doing.

The poisonous or unhealthy part of the relationship isn't what Kaworu does to Shinji, it's what Shinji does to Kaworu.
The relationship would never work because Kaworu would never be happy or satisfied with Shinji. Because of the way fucked up suicidal way Kaworu views the world and human beings, he would sooner die than be with Shinji, which is exactly what he did.

What Kaworu gives Shinji is exactly what he needs, but Shinji can give Kaworu nothing in return and that's why it doesn't work. It's too one-sided.

I think it's value in that matter comes to personal preference but I am a firm believer in brevity bring the soul of wit so all the meandering with pretty meaningless visuals gets very tiring and feels unnecessary to me. I can understand why you might enjoy it or even prefer it since its visuals are interesting and it still stays fairly true to the original ending, but it covers it with so much needless and pointless crap that I hate it compared to the straight forward anime ending.

Kaworu had a super nice personality that, if im not wrong, anno said it was everything shinji wanted to be.
