It takes repetition to know the yaku (hands). Games against the AI, especially with an app, would help. Some kind of yaku list can help as a reference.

As for scoring, don't bother with it, until you've learned the game well-enough.

What's the highest possible yakuman you can have in normal rules?

Suuankou tanki + Daisangen + Tsuuiisou counts as 4 yakuman under some rules, that's the highest one I know of.

Suuankou with pair wait (double yakuman) + Daisuushii (double yakuman) + Tsuuiisou + Suukantsu/Tenhou (I'm not sure if you can get both of these at the same time).

In any case, this is a 6-fold yakuman worth 288000 points for the dealer.

Didn't notice that when I saw them construct their hands. So if the rest of his hand was two complete sets and let's say a pair of honor tiles, he would be able to declare Riichi and wait on a 1 or 4 man tile?

If theoretically the rest of his hand consisted of say a 345 pin and a 234 sou with a pair of haku, would this be a good/complete hand? Would it be a yaku or would it not consist of enough han?

Again apologies if the answer seems obvious or stupid but I only learned some of these terms recently because I just read the 17 steps variant gamble in Kaiji (just to say I fully understand that's not how actual mahjong is played and it was very simplified and skipped several steps to make it into an intense one on one gamble).

What happened to Miyoshi and Maeda is the same as others who betray Kaiji: they are fucking dead to him and he doesn't care anymore. The two of them were desperate, gullible, and stupid people which is why they ended up in the underground labor camp to begin with and how they ended up as long term 45ers.

They are ungrateful pieces of shit and natural bad gamblers so they are prone to stupid decisions. Kaiji doesn't fully blame them because of the warping effect money has on people, but he still was hoping that the 45ers all held a bond that such petty shit and simple talk could break. He's done with them and doesn't care what happens to them after that, he told them off and got to hit them he now just never wanted to see their traitorous faces ever again.

I don't know if they come back in the future but I'm in the middle of the savior game and I don't see any reason to address them every again or at least any time soon.

It would be much better if the 1 mans were 4 mans instead, but it is still pretty decent if we assume that the honor wait is not completely dead yet. Even though it doesn't contain any yaku by itself, it still is a pretty good hand if you manage to obtain tenpai fast enough and declare riichi.

So ideally that's a good hand if you manage to draw it early on, no one has discarded 1 man, 4 man, or the honor tiles yet? So it would be a safe hand to call riichi if it's early in the game and wait for a good draw to call tsumo or call ron if they get discarded? But if it's later on and several of those tiles have been discarded or were the initial dora indicator then it wouldn't be as safe a hand and I'm figuring it would be smarter for the player to try going for a different wait?

Okay now I think I understand, in seventeen steps it was more crucial since your tenpai had to be at least mangan in order to win. The dora itself wouldn't contribute into making a valid winning hand it comes into play when deciding a winning hand's worth and just how huge the payout will be.
