Stalker figures vary in accuracy quite a bit but are usually a decent indication of what the Oricon figures will be. Oricon figure are treated as the gold standard and objectively true by many but those are once again just estimates. They do not take data from every single store that sells BD/DVDs so it is always possible that they are way off if something gets bought a lot from a store that doesn't partner with them for some reason. They also specifically exclude all overseas sales. Publisher figures are often much higher commonly 15-20% higher in cases where publishers have disclosed sales figures.

I actually think the animation was a big part of its success. It played a big role in drawing attention to the show and worked well within the context of the show to enable the show to subvert viewer expectations. That isn't to discount other aspects of the show which undoubtedly played a big role too. But I don't think Kemono Friends was a success despite of its animation. It all worked together really well. If it was just another 2D animated low budget show I doubt it would have taken off like it did. The whole approach was a premeditated gamble. They intentionally created an innocuous seeming world to greater enhance the draw of the small parts of the mystery they dropped in and just didn't explain.

It's not just negative attention. The whole aesthetic worked to the shows advantage on a storytelling level and that is what good animation is all about. Good animation is not just about sakuga on the 1s, it can be that but thats not everything. Good animation is primarily animation that enhances storytelling. A virtuoso violin solo might be technically brilliant but that doesn't mean its going to be more affecting than an amateur singer songwriter playing some simple chord pattern on a guitar.

Here is an interview with Kotaro Ishidate about the shows success. Director on Tesagure who left Yaoyarozu. He very much believes it was part of a strategy to intentionally subvert view expectations. He essentially says things like the child like dialogue and low budget CG worked to lower the viewers guard before the show drew viewers in with dropping hints at mysteries and revealing a rich deep setting and that the gap between that initial perception and the reality of the show is a part of the success. Then goes onto say that creating this effect in his opinion was no accident or fluke but a strategy. He also says that luck and timing also played a part in the success as with any big hit and that the fact they managed to keep the characters cute instead of coming of creepy or uncanny like a lot of CG does also worked in its favour.
