Was / Is Griffin in love with Guts? In the manga he has some pretty yaoi thoughts in his head.

To be honest I believe he desires Guts, Casca rape was his form of hurting them both.

Unironically I think was the kind of non-sexual love. He truly admired Guts and needed him by his side, but did not wish for a homosexual relationship with him. He was the man in charge, and he felt above all others. Guts was the man that made him feel like a person again, as Guts made him realize he was still able to have friends.

Much like how Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler had a very intimate but non-sexual relationship during his time as before the fall of Germany. Speer loved Hitler and devoted his life to him, and Hitler almost did the same. Yet much like how Guts left Griffith, there came a time where their ideologies differed, and Speer went against Hitler and Hitler went after him.

I always saw it as Griffith having a legit boy crush on Guts. Wishes of assfucking included.

Now I've only gotten this far in the anime.
But there is this point shortly after they've rescued Griffith from the prison and Guts talks to Casca about staying and not leaving, and Casca tells him that he should leave as it is the only way for him to become Griffiths equal and all that.
Griffith hears the conversation and it hits him that the only reason why Guts left in the first place was to earn Griffiths's respect, Griffith looks to be in such genuine despair and sadness because of that realisation, that I don't think he actually wanted Guts as a true equal, but more as a large hunk of sexy ass-blasting iron BF.

I don't think the friends factor played any role there. Having Guts around didn't change Griffith's attitude to other people - he didn't suddenly start enjoying their company more or anything. He was perfectly content staying as he was, only with Guts nearby. And as he admitted himself, it was Guts alone who made him forget his dream. He'd had thousands of comrades, but only Guts truly mattered to him.
