Japan is a victim of late stage capitalism like all first world countries, and thus it's people are trapped in ennui that means they no longer care about the past or the future.

The only genres that still get made are an escape from the hellish world they live in every day (isekai and highschooler shows) or pure dopamine inducing content to give them an escape ala drugs (idol/waifu shows)

It's like yakuza-centric stories, people who are interested in it stick to live-action dramas/films instead of anime.
