Gate manga threads are my favorite. On retrospect, I know we should be glad it got an anime adaptation that was a full double cour, however the art was so out of place and generic.

Sao Satoru most likely gets it right because he's one of those cool manga artists that REALLY take attention to detail seriously, instead of OMG cute girls and harems. Accurate weapons, equipment, and detailed lines on everything. The hybrid girls are all deliciously proportioned and detailed while attempting to stay true to the monster girl design.

Lelei is the only big change I can kinda dig. It's different and I definitely prefer her manga version (she's more of a person there rather than a kawaii moeblob) but at least its respectful towards the LN.

What they did with people like Zorzal, Kuribaiyashi or the monstergirl is a travesty.

The closest contemporary of his that I can think of Kenichi Sonoda, although Sonoda is technically more proficient and has some of the cleanest lines (and sluttiest girls) in the business.

Sao Satoru also had some military service with the JSDF, if I'm not mistaken. Can anyone confirm this? Or was it just the GATE novel's author?

The story starts off pretty poor with an interesting premise, but very flawed execution. At least as far as the manga goes the art can carry this area and there are some hilarious moments that may be unintentional. Once you get past a certain point though I feel like the series levels out and starts to improve. I don't know how much of this is just stuff from the original WN not coming across the same as it does in the manga but the comic so far has been very enjoyable.

I'm reading the manga right now.
The pacing feels pretty off for me.

I'm ~45 chapters in, and the only things keeping me interested are Rory chapters. Does this get any better/are there more Rory chapters or should I cut my losses?

This was just another one of those series with a strong first few episodes that very quickly devolved into utter irredeemable garbage.

Be glad that it won't get another season.

Depends on what you mean by "It". The anime? Not really. There's a scene near the end where they paradrop on the capital and remove olive, and that's worth a watch, though the anime as a whole doesn't really go far enough in the story to "get better". The manga is worth a read, though, if you're interested.

I started with the manga, I've heard the LN wasn't bad but I'm already stuck reading Konosuba and Goblin Slayer so I'm not sure if I have time to pick it up.
