Kirito is also a very emotional person and lets his emotions control him from time to time. The deaths of Sachi and the Moonlit Black Cats had haunted him until his marriage with Asuna in Sword Art Online. Sachi's death in particular had a huge effect on his personality and motives, making him very distant from others for a while. This worries his friends and allies as Kirito is someone who would let guilt ruin his life if not comforted. Kirito temporarily loses his will to live when Asuna's character was killed by Heathcliff. He also tries to hide his abilities, not wanting unneeded attention. Kirito is a person with incredibly strong resolve who will do anything and everything in his power to accomplish something that is important to him without any hesitation. When Asuna was being held in ALfheim, Kirito was bound and determined to set her free and, when Yui confirmed that she detected Asuna being at the top of the World Tree, he immediately tried to fly up to the tree, which had already been found to be an impossible task, and tried to fight his way to the top by himself twice despite being annihilated the first time.

After escaping SAO, Kirito attempts to repair his relationship with Suguha, his cousin. This shows Kirito is now attempting to make up for his past mistake of ignoring her, showing a sense of maturity. Kirito, later in the series, is shown to be a calm and mature player who can be teasing as well.

i always felt that kirito had a personality but the author just wasn't conveying it the way he thought he was conveying it. I find most people's criticisms of kirito's personality to be correct in with the material presented to us.

My own guessing at the intent of the author and speculating that he wasn't able to communicate properly might as well just be headcanon so i accept that kirito is a poorly written character who isn't very interesting.

Possessing character traits doesn't make someone a good character. Kirito is dreadfully boring. Cool-headed, kind and brave are the three most generic traits you could assign a protagonist, and they form almost the entirety of his identity. The lack of a strong supporting cast in SAO (I couldn't be bothered to watch more than that) meant that he wasn't able to develop interesting relations with other characters. Instead, he became a character who was defined by his stuff. He's a beater. He can dual wield. He's a loner. This is the kind of stuff that makes up a young teenager's first attempts at fiction and character. It's no wonder that that audience eats him up. If you're an adult and you think Kirito is a good character, you're either blinded by nostalgia or completely lacking in discerning taste.

I always felt Kirito wasn't "self-insert" but is just a very real person, who is extremely similar to us.
He is extremely conscientious, and whenever he does anything, he does it in overdrive. He played hardcore like his life depended on it, and became the best in the world at something for the first time. He had very little social interaction before the game, aswell as in it. He picked the first girl who interacted with him more than just "you're so cool!", and marries her. Once the games are over he realizes that he wants to use the tech to do something more socially acceptable, so he starts working on development of nerve gear, and goes all out with that too. He then goes full on Dad mode when everything is over, and basically settles in with Asuna after she mentally matures and tells her parents to fuck off.

Honestly, I bet this story applies to like half of the people here. I wouldn't really call this self-insert
