Touhou has been as popular as ever.

People posting comiket numbers fail to understand how the event actually works. You can't have an unlimited number of circles, shit is limited. As the event and other series like boat slutting became popular artists had to choose where to publish and what to prioritize. This is why touhou reitaisai is fucking huge. Kantai had an event on the same day this year and it was pathetically small, not even half the size of touhous. Meanwhile the space that the touhou booths occupied during reitaisai vastly outnumbered any singular series on comiket.

Not to mention doujin stores like melon books being filled to the brim with touhou shit throughout the whole year because of the constant output of original works.

You should really try seeing how the situation is actually in Japan before spouting misinformation.
