What's the correct point to stop watching FMA 2003 and resume

You don't. FMA 2003's timeline continuity is rather different and even in the early episodes there's some pretty sizable changes.

Just watch all of the 2003. It's a great series. The two stories compliment each other in what they on their own lack.

The Hughes episode isn't as good, I'll grant you, but it's only 5-6 episodes and there's some big changes anyway. Like everything to do with Maria whateverhernameis. Just throw it on in the background while you're playing the vidya.
