S1 was premium shit. S2 had some issues.
Don't expect anything different if Part 3 ever gets animated. Almost the whole thing takes place in an unremarkable back office room.
In Part 4, everything with Kazuya has been interesting, and there's much more spectacle and tension, however there's no conclusion yet. I don't want the ending to feel like Akagi's eventually did. I want to feel the zawa zawas.

There are good things in Part 3, but it's the least dynamic part of the series. If OP didn't like half a season sitting at a pachinko machine, he's not going to be engaged by an entire season in a back room playing majong for relatively low stakes.
>>157689342

>>157692824

>>157692646
There is plenty of content in playing the Bog. Yeah it probably could have been condensed some but honestly I could only see it being cut maybe down by an episode. The point of the Bog is how desperate Kaiji has to get, it's supposed to really punctuate that he's truly doomed to be the struggler and that this is his doomed fate. But the reason Kaiji is the struggler isn't just his awful fate but the fact that he won't accept it, he will forever fight to keep himself from falling into hell.
The Bog is literally Kaiji fighting impossible odds, every episode is him encountering a new insurmountable odd as he just tries to buy himself more and more time in order to pull victory from a sure loss. Every episode is rich in atmosphere, tension, and character interactions all while building up to an amazing climax.
I prefer season 1 but the Bog had some excellent execution that to this day ties my stomach into knots with the genuine anxiety it creates.
Can you pick up the manga where the anime left off? Would I be missing anything or should I go back and read from the start?

Ten is by far the best FKMT manga when it comes to mahjong. On top of having much more fluid pacing than Kaiji & Akagi, it goes much more in-depth about strategies and smart plays, has a much bigger cast with everyone having their own little things to spice up things, plenty of ballsy cheating and the best characterization of Akagi by far.Harada and Soga would destroy Washizu without even breaking a sweat tbqh

i see you're a man of culture as well!
i always found it strange how the stakes in the east west battle are a little unclear, and i'm not sure what they mean (the balance of the mahjong playing underworld at stake?), but the matches are so engaging and interesting regardless. it's really good mahjong. somehow a little less flashy than in akagi, and it taught me a lot more about mahjong than i expected.not to mention all the fleshing out the characters get in the last three volumes damn, rip akagi you magnificent bastard
ten really is fkmt's magnum opus
>>157692793
He really didn't deserve what he got. Poor thing.
>>157697388
>Harada and Soga would destroy Washizu without breaking a sweat
Washizu mahjong is too geared in Washizu's favour. Is it even possible to win that easily?
Would Akagi win if he played all the games (not related to mahjong) Kaiji went through?
>>157698075
It's a double edged sword. Washizu is a shrewd asshole who set up a game where he's practically guaranteed victory, especially with his almost cheating luck, but he's also overly reliant on those favorable odds and the psychological pressure it puts on the people facing him. He's also particulary vulnerable to mindgames as a result. He wasn't able to score one single ron against Akagi who was reading him like a book, and the dude was practically half-dead for 4 rounds as well.
Harada and Soga are both tough dudes who ruled the underworld and they're also scarily good players. I really doubt someone as lenient as Old Washizu who's just using the game as a distraction to wank himself wouldn't completely lose his shit when facing players who could actually give Akagi a run for his money.
>>157698533
You're forgetting Washizu's godly luck, and determination to win.
I mean, how many godly hands did washizu assemble over these past 20 years?
>>157689342

>>157698587
Soga has also a godly luck that may actualy be a sixth sense to know what tiles come up. He'd be unstoppable in a setting that allows you to pick whatever tile comes in your hand, on top of actually be able to play the game.

>>157689962
Yeah crossboarder-kun, not every show is pile of muscles hitting each other for 20 minutes while explosions go off in the background. If you can't understand what makes Kaiji what it is, then how the fuck did you even manage to watch 3/4ths of the entire show? The only ones that are is

>>157701305
>Other than that they are in their own worlds
I don't think that's the case. They're in the same world, the stories are just connected. Kurosawa shows up in the Kaiji S2 OP, there's a few other cameos I'm forgetting too.

>>157689342
Akagi was a mistake. You'll notice that the perspective switches from Akagi to the antagonist more and more as the series goes on because Akagi is the one with all the secrets and hidden plans to victory. Being in his head would ruin the suspense.
This is why the prespective still bounces back and forth with Kaiji and his opponents. Kaiji actually struggles to win.

>>157699558

>>157701859
you were a mistake anon
we aren't in akagi's head because the whole point is that his understanding is that beyond of regular humans, and the story approach of interpreting the matches from the perspective of onlookers (which is much more often than the antagonist), is a brilliant move on fkmt's part, allowing us to figure things out with them as the match progresses (if not understanding before they do)
>>157702045
The anime is a pretty faithful adaptation, and i really like the soundtrack as well. If you watch it, remember that there is one match they cut out from the anime, the one between the Urabe and Washizu matches.
You'll probably be inspired to give both the manga and the anime a try, if you end up liking it. I loved to see how they adapted certain scenes from the manga into the anime.

there are 8 or 9 more chapters left and also, it's not a bad idea to get to know akagi better before reading ten. it's good to get a better grasp on mahjong as well.
if you read ten first, and then akagi would be kinda interesting. it might help you understand akagi better. older akagi is more chill, but at the core they are still the same person of course.

I just rewatched all of s2 a few days ago and it was just as good as the first time. Chinchiro in the first third was also great, especially the payoff.
>>157711299
kaiji made me realise that knowing the ending/accidentally getting it spoilered doesn't really count when it comes to good shows because it's all about the buildup. from the S1 finale I knew 100% thathe would never hold on to money to the end.
>>157711452
I liked how with chinchiro they gave the viewer several hints and chances to figure out how the foreman was cheating. They even showed the 4-5-6 double sided dice spinning in the background during an exposition once.

it's a really peculiar thing for me with fkmt works, even if you're spoiled an ending or element of something, it's still such a wild ride, and the payoff is great anyway! can't really say that about everything out there.
I like Kaiji, and it was a fun enough watch, but god damn if the character designs aren't the ugliest thing I've ever fucking seen. It's like the worst sameface syndrome I've ever witnessed coupled with the most "look how unique I am" art style. I truly hate it. Decent show though.

Also this video is clipped out of order and that triggers me.
>>157697873
Part of that lack of clarity into the real stakes of the East-West battle is because we're following along side Hiroyuki, who's an outsider to that entire scene. I think HERO might go a bit farther into that sort of balance of the underworld, but I kinda doubt it.
>>157712762
Part 4 with Kazuya is really great. They should just skip mahjong and make S3 prom part 4.
>>157713003
To be fair, a major point of part 3 is the introduction of Kazuya. Without having that context, Part 4 doesn't make as much sense as to why Kaiji is so angry towards him initially. This is coming from having just reread part 3.
You can do part 3 is 12 episodes or less, assuming you cut out most of the in depth mahjong analysis that's there. Taking that out, its an amazing arc on its own without needing an understanding of mahjong. We get a 2-cour where its split with 17 Steps and Salvation Game, you'd have a pretty solid season (then having One Poker as a 1-cour after).

I know that FKMT used to draw in an almost-cutesy style, appropriate for the time his manga won in the chiba tetsuya awards; it kind of makes me think he forcefully developed his style to the current version to be more noticed. But the style in beginning of Ten and Gin to Kin are between the cutesy and current styles, and show a natural progression, so I don't know.
I like the way FKMT draws, honestly. It made me get into his series in the first place.

I hope for the (very unlikely) possibility that the doctor (from his own spin-off) re-grows up (he should have around 20 years for that) and can remake his anti-aging drug and so Washizu could be alive in Hiroyuki's spin-off, like Ichikawa.
>>157710327
it would be fun to imagine what would happen if we were to replace Urabe with Kaiji, of course Akagi would accept a rematch (the madman thinks that family, etc., are all breaks between games, and that if he becomes unable to play, he'd have no use for his life -- "the self is more important than life"), Kaiji could then be comparable with Washizu after the 4th hanchan (showing his true abilities, going to the bitter end of an agreement and putting his own survival aside).
i read akagi from beginning to end and still couldnt tell you how to play mahjong
>>157718609
You can't understand it unless you're Japanese. They're born with the ability to comprehend mahjong. It's genetics.
>>157717022
speaking of comparisons (>>157718355
), Kaiji could be compared with Ten due to the endurance theme, although they deal with it on different ways (it feels like Ten knows he'll get beat up by cheating his way to a win, at times badly, and still does it anyways, has great pressure/psychological resistance, and great perseverance in adverse situations)

Akagi is the dumbest character I've ever seen in an anime.
And aside from the attempt to make his character look smart being an utter failure, he is also unlikable unlike kaiji as he's a motiveless coldhearted piece of shit.
It's like watching a show of the old fart in Kaiji as he grew up.
Absolutely disgusting.
i dont know the rules of mahjong and i don't plan to lean.
why did it have to happen in kaiji for the mother of fuck i dont CAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE

japan has a really crazy anti drug mindset and the musician got busted for weed so he's now an undesirable. a kaiji crew is now kinda stigmatized as "those people who worked with a stoner" and even if they did miraculously make a third season, it wouldn't have the same music so what's the point
>>157723715
The version in Kaiji is super simple and fast paced
It mostly just boils down to 'this is the piece I need, how can I cheat or guesstimate as to what piece he needs'
>>157726849
it was too long
it was 10 episodes on that one game (16-25)
>>157723362
Akagi is fkmt's attempt at writing a story about different kinds of genius. Through mahjong he explores the different ways people are talented, and I feel tries to reconsile his own feelings about how unfairness of someone being extremely gifted in comparison to everyone else.
In that respect, Akagi is one of the best written fkmt characters, understandable but maybe not quite relatable. It's too bad you don't like him. He definitely doesn't grow up to be like Hyodo too.
*narrator yelling in background*
Where do I learn how to play Mahjong?
>>157730672
google.
>>157723362
>And aside from the attempt to make his character look smart being an utter failure
how so?
>he is also unlikable unlike kaiji
I personally prefer Akagi, because not only Akagi is a complex, unique character himself, more importantly, his abilities are more entertaining to read/watch for me: he has amazing people reading skills, intelligence gathering, can plan ahead and see deep possibilities (for example, the final round against Ichikawa and especially against Urabe)
>as he's a motiveless coldhearted piece of shit.
Kaiji plays games (seriously) because he gets himself in situations where he's forced to, games are to him a mean to a goal. For Akagi, games are the goal themselves. He plays them without regard for rewards or payments (showing apathy after the matches end, offering to play games where he doesn't benefit from them, whether he wins or loses), and high-stakes games are how he can play against other people who're also serious about winning.
>It's like watching a show of the old fart in Kaiji as he grew up.
except that unlike him, Akagi actively gets rid of his prize money instead of letting it pile up, he sees money, success and fame as luxuries which build up to take away one's freedom, and aren't truly part of one's life. Even Gin (from Gin to Kin) who's rich and ambitious is more likable than the old fart, character-wise.
when is season 3
I've recently read kurosawa and just started the sequel 8 years later. The first was great and I've enjoyed it more than anything in a long time, but the sequel just seems like it's now entirely self-deprecating with next to no redemption. I'm only a few chapters in with Kurosawa just regaining his voice and begging to go to the mixer, but it doesn't even feel like it's worth bothering to keep reading.
Does it get better to make reading worthwhile? Does it ever get close to the original?
>>157733729
Never.I hate it.
>>157723362
I ended out rooting for Washizu.
Not because I don't like Akagi, but more because Washizu, despite being a horrible bastard, was more human.
I like how the two characters begin to relate to each other as the mach progresses.
>>157691327
>not losing your fucking mind when kaiji calls ron
part 3 was great
>>157696573
underrated
>>157733935
I've held off on the sequel, because frankly the first ended so perfectly I'm surprised it was even returned to.
That said I have faith in FKMT and I'll definitely read it at some stage, but your concerns aren't helping me.
>>157735012
I wouldn't be surprised at all if it does pick up and have a decent ending, but it's still ongoing so I don't have that to look forward to for a while. The original's ending was great and the first 10 or so chapters of the sequel has really hurt its impact to me. It's like fukumoto did a hard reset on kurosawa and got rid of most of his character development, I hate it when writers do that.
So Kaiji vs. Akagi never ever ? I mean, they both in the same time period, right ? Same country. They even deal with same shady people.Akagi would have been winning all the time and near the end tables would have turned for Kaiji.
i dont even want season 3. it would never be the same without the music composer, who was blacklisted form the industry for being caught with weed
fuck nippon, man
Potential bait thread but I really wasn't a fan either. It had its moments, but the narrator got on my nerves is my main complaint
>>157736743
Did he get out of jail yet, at least?
>>157737051
not a clue
>>157736583
Not even Kaiji could stage a last minute turnaround against Akagi. He's got no chance.
>>157736583
Kaiji has 0 chances against Akagi. This setup is literally only good for another display of Kaiji's infinite suffering.
>>157697789
The Saki version is still the best one
>>157737107
>>157737257
No. When Kaiji is absolute shit that´s when he is at his best. This would have helped him to defeat Akagi.
>>157738228
No one's denying that. Kaiji is a real piece of shit until he's backed into a corner, but even his best isn't enough to scratch Akagi. Akagi plays on a different level to literally everyone else.
>>157738228
>>157738329
Someone post the Kaiji vs Akagi Rock Paper Scissor pasta
>Fukumoto will never do an UNO gamble manga
Just zawa my shit up
>>157740605
I hope the big finale of Kaiji is an UNO match between Kaiji and Hyodo
>>157737257
maybe if the players are of equal strength, both of them might survive. As for pic related, I like how the chance for a complete tie is 1/362880 (if I'm not mistaken), yet Akagi accepts it, while Hiroyuki refuses a match with a much lower probability (1/156).

How do we get FKMTKrazy to translate more of FKMT's older work like Wani no Hatsukoi or Shinjitsu no Otoko

learn basic yaku off of osamuko or arcturus and then you can practice a little bit on http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html or some japanese mahjong phone app, before you go against real people on tehnou.net, if you want. the rest will just come along the way.
also while reading whatever mahjong manga, just look up every term you don't know on arcturus and you'll be fine.
>>157731864
Couldn't have said it better myself, anon.
Have you been reading HERO? I am hesitant to start, I don't want to see Hiro continuing to chase after Akagi and Ten's backs. I'm sure it has good mahjong though.
>>157734708
I feel the same way, I was liking Washizu more and more as the match went on; by the time hewent to hell and backhe had already cemented himself as a favourite.
>>157743788
I was able to find sites only till 100th chapter. While I know that it ain't fully translated could you tell me where to look for more?
Could anyone not named Akagi Shigeru beat Washizu? I'm pretty sure Washizu is invincible too.
>>157745219
Washizu is cute, CUTE!

caught up with the english scanlations, liked Hiroyuki's insights and apparently, there will be a second East/West showdown on it, looking forward to it.
Hiro is following Akagi's advice and attempting to improve as a player, he now believes he has the resolve needed to follow the path he wants. His first match is against Ten.
>>157690414
Well, LOGH literally is a book/novel.
How is kaiji so fucking cute?
>>157753002
Suffering is moe.
>>157753002
He's like a lost puppy.
What the fuck guys I just marathoned this thing and I'm so fucking angry about that ending. What the actual fuck? I was glad he finally won the pachinko game after 100 episodes of fucking agony. Something good finally happened to him. But now this?? I just can't believe it. What did he do to deserve this? Everyone keeps fucking him over but he remains so nice and pure till the end. Truly unbelievable. I am angry boys. I'm off to read the manga now. Will anything good ever happen to him? Please post your moe Kaijis to soothe the pain. Thank you.
>>157754954
It's a seinen series. No one is allowed to be happy.
>>157754954
why are you angry? kaiji's world needs 70% brain and 30% selfish attitude to survive. he knows that very well but still tries his best to put himself in a disadvantage by rescuing other scumbags. he is also a gambling addict. he is trash, but everyone loves him and the show is great.
>>157754826
No, that would be Karl. Kaiji is doing this to himself. Why would he lose his fucking mind and offer a lottery to the chairman when he already got all the money he needed to repay the debt and start a new life? He's a gambling addict. He's still my waifu though.
>>157755319
I know I know but I just lost my shit when Endo left with his money. I know Kaiji's actions don't make sense but I can't fucking help getting angry cause he kept helping others even in his condition only to get backstabbed. Anyway it certainly was a ride and the soundtrack was pretty awesome.
>>157689342
Watched the whole series 2 times.
>literally the most painful thing i have ever had to watch
Yeah, no shit, Sherlock. Pain is what you're supposed to feel while watching that.
Imagine:
You are nothing, have nothing and you've done nearly everything to get yourself a chance at living a normal life.
How would you feel if you were short of fucking up pretty bad?
>>157754954
If he ever was to stop getting fucked over the story would end. So he has to be in this infinite cycle of suffering some great win only to get into more despair later. Plus he's a gambling addict, he can't control himself. When hewon 300 millater in the manga he only thought about getting a higher bet.
>>157754954
There is never any happiness and no payoff. Such is the life when you're a dreg of society.
>>157755600
I knew Endo would fuck him over with the 2nd contract since it was signed in such a hurry and when he signed the 1st contract he made such a fuss about being fucked over even in such a situation. That's the thing I liked about the series, it gave you hints and you had to guess what's coming.
>>157755753
>>157755787
>>157755266
Well fuck. Anyway, I'll have to accept the harsh reality. But it's not like I won't enjoy reading numerous chapters of Kaiji suffering and crying.
>>157755865
You are right now that you say it. I completely overlooked that part.
>>157754954
He got off pretty good with 100 000 yen left and his friends saved (plus one). Endo did fuck with him but it wasn't so bad and he also invested a lot in the plan so why not.
The bad things actually start now
>>157689342
The thing that irritated me about Kaiji was the crowd noise, that "sha sha sha" sound that's supposed to be people talking under the breath or something.
>>157756237
I guess there was no saving him either way, cause even if he got all his money he would waste it in no time, but it still was frustrating.
