Probably but overrated ≠ bad

The most misunderstood show ever. It's so complex, every single scene has to be analysed by professionals, in order to be understood by the low educated masses. It's too deep for the current generation of people, to be honest. Ram was the key to all this, they got her working and she was not simply a write-along character to Rem with implied depth (without actually having any). It's like poetry, every arc feels so different from one another, one must wonder if the creator is a hack/fraud, or actually the smartest writer of the decade. And the villainous cult that utilises "sins" as metric of leadership is something NEVER done before, in dat way, therefore deconstruction. The fact the you see the dead corpse of the main character (a lot), really makes you glad that he suffered due to being an (intentional) airhead, who isn't concerned about to the people that he left back home. So, as I was saying this is a the best anim 2016. I just wish my kids grow up to see the best scene in season 3, where it's revealed that Rem is in a comma and that the doctors won't be able to save her. So then Emilia has to pull the plug, on the life support, but she can't because she is too busy not being an actual character, but a cut-out that any audience member can attach character traits to, so that she can seem D E E P. I bet I'll be dead by then,tho. Shit I might die today from over-watching re:zero. I watched it, like, five hundred times already and I am so glad at times the show's so slow; I can literally go outside, piss on my neighbour's ugly bicycle, go to the convenience store, go into another dimension full of boring characters devoid of souls that look cuter than my highschool crush, Kill-My-Self until the witch that brought me there actually gets angry with me and sends me back to the store. In a way that's how it works for most LN adaptations isn't it? Since the story shown in the anime almost always is incomplete. That being said, I don't think Re:Zero made that big a mistake. Seeing Subaru finally learn from his own mistakes and actually having a civil conversation with his to-be allies against the white whale and grasping their intentions was pretty good. And it's not like we don't see the other characters interacting with one another either. I actually don't know what's so bad about the white whale arc that made people so mad.

I don't think it'd be inaccurate to say that at least half the dialogue was cut from what it was in the source material. The basic structure is still there, but it's extremely rushed in a way that changes how the characters and their interactions come across.

Unfortunately, there's no translation for the first few Arcs of the WN, which is a shame because there are some serious differences in characterization between them. I've been putting off finishing Arc 3 of the WN for awhile now, and I haven't read the LN version, but I feel like most people who started reading at Arc 4 of the WN are missing a lot of shit.

The general plot is the same as the anime, so you can still work things out if you continue from where that ended, but there's a lot of shit you'll be missing. You'll have to understand that you're basically missing out on half of the content of Arc 3. The dialogue cuts have a major effect on how characters are perceived.

The anime makes Rem look more passive than she really is, and doesn't fully convey how much Subaru starts to cling to her. To the point where he has a very nasty panic attack, wanting to claw at his brain before losing consciousness, when she says something he could interpret as her not having full and complete faith in him.

He's not evil, but you can understand why he didn't have friends. He doesn't seem to have a working filter at all, and there are a lot more anecdotes about stupid shit he did as a kid. He gets jealous a lot more quickly in Arc 2, and that leads to him jumping to rather unsavory conclusions. And since he doesn't know how to shut his mouth, he tells others about them as if they were true.

So, yes. He's definitely more repulsive and less sensitive. The LN makes him look more "charming eccentric", compared to the WN's "obnoxious douche". Still, he starts treating the people around him with more respect at the end of Arc 2, and starts communicating with them better after he stopped imagining that they were all fucking the clown.

Oh, and stopped think of Rem and Ram by their hair colors, or as inferior/superior versions of the other sister. Rem was "Upgraded Ram" in this context, since Subaru always thought she was better than Ram in every way.

If you pay attention, Ram was getting along with Subaru pretty well until Rem fell in love with him. It was only then that Ram turned into a complete bitch and started getting more violent. Ram doesn't want anyone to steal her Rem away from her. Rem declaring her independence from her was her worst nightmare.

If Subaru wants revenge on Ram, fucking Rem right in front of her would be the way to do it. Especially if he could get Rem to say she loves Subaru more than her, and is planning to have all of his babies. Who she'll also love more than Ram, though maybe she could babysit while Rem makes even more babies.
