It's kind of weird how the Eva pilots didn't really ever seem to do any physical training outside of this episode

I know they don't really fight with their bodies, but fighter pilots need to be in decent shape, so I'd imagine the same logic applies to a degree.

Or maybe the average level of fitness for scrawny teenagers has gone up in the hellish post-2nd Impact world

The reason some of the early episodes are so tonally different from the later episodes is because no one was watching this shit as it was airing so they shifted tone drastically on the second cour to shake things up and gain some viewers.

And they failed at that. Eva only became popular after it finished airing on re-broadcasts when the japs started mistaking desperation, meaningless religious symbolism and psychology 101 lingo for actual depth.
