I think Ikuhara is closer to being the anime equivalent to Lynch than Anno.
Especially when you consider Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma in addition to Utena.

I was thinking about the similar endings of Evangelion and Twin peaks.

Many anons expressed how they wanted Kaworu removed if they could change anything about Evangelion. Same thing with Cooper's love interest.

For Shinji it was a kind of "heaven" and for Cooper it was a kind of purgatory.

desu, besides the last two episodes and second part of the movie EVA is not really that surreal, compared to Utena for example in which Imagery is very heavily used the whole show.

Eva has probably more screen time dedicated to surreal scenes than Twin Peaks. Even then it's hard to call the ones in twin peaks surreal, they're more fantastical and just the aesthetic and atmosphere is surreal.

Heard the new season of Twin Peaks is the weirdest the show's ever been. Can't wait.
