That's not why she likes him. She's seen him be a tryhard loser plenty of times in day to day life, and it's emphasized that's part of what she finds endearing about him because she can relate. Seeing him fail wouldn't give her much worse of an impression.

As for the whale, he won that because he had a cellphone. Rem had already gotten the negotiations to a stalemate, where Crusch needed just a little more to convince her to make the alliance. The only thing Subaru really contributed was knowledge of the White Whale, which was enough to shift the balance.

It was a team effort, so much so that in the WN Subaru held her hand during the negotiation to calm his nerves and whenever Subaru was about to fuck up Rem would hold him back. Subaru actually had a nasty panic attack when he heard that last part, which was pre-confession, because he wasn't sure if Rem actually had faith in him or his decisions.
