It's a good theory, especially since we never see him with the gag really in the east blue ... except maybe in Kuro's arc. I forget if his bad sense of direction came up there.

That's the thing, it isn't really the status-quo resuming. Ranma's admitted, at least to himself, that he loves Akane. Shampoo and Ukyo are basically desperate in the last chapter. Ryoga, Konatsu, and Mousse all know how things are going to end up.

Basically Ranma 1/2 ends at the exact point where the status quo can't continue and most series would start resolving everything.

What I find really funny of Ranma 1/2, is that Rumiko was still salty from losing the Atarubowl in UY (her self-insert was Shinobu). So she created a discount Shinobu (Akane) and this time avoided getting NTR by another of her characters.
