They should have made the movie a completely original story instead of a weird partial adaptation of the manga. It would have worked better.
The music was amazing, though.

How did Sanakan enter the village? The electro-fisher don't trust Killy until after he walks through the barrier, which implies that a Safeguard may disguise as a human but cannot fool the barrier, and then Sanakan does exactly that. It's like the scriptwriter first established the importance of the Safeguard barrier and then hoped we immediately forgot what it's supposed to do and then remembered what it did after it was destroyed. What gives? Cute webm not related.

I have the reprints in Japanese. If you can tell me which volume it is, I can take a look at what she says.
I hope it's not #2, because I've lent it to a friend, so don't have it right now.
>>
>>157550755
They removed all the stuff about Killy rescuing her from the Corporation and breaking through the megastructure that was blocking their expansion.
In the manga they've been traveling together for some time before meeting the electro-fishers. In the movie, Cibo just shows up and leaves before they develop any kind of relationship.

I get that there's only so much story you can include in a 90-minute movie, but I still would have preferred to see them show up to the village together.

>>157550985
The Master Edition is probably a better translation, since it's later shown that Toha Heavy Industries is actually separate from the rest of the City.
The Omanga release is pretty sketchy in other parts as well. The only real advantage is has over the official release is using "Killy" instead of "Kyrii".

So, what exactly is wrong with Kyrii?
Original furigana of his name is キリイ. Ki ri i. Kyrii is basically that. Here is the pic of the original text.

I am aware that original covers had "Killy" on it, but it's also from the guy who named his manga "Blame" because he though that it's how you spell "blam" sound.

I can see some retard reading "ki" in "Kirii" like the first syllable of "kite".

And no, Killy is a not a good substitute. The "ri" syllable is not doubled, so there can't be double L or R. There is also "i" after "ri". Which means it's a doubled sound, best transliterated as double "i".

I mean, personally, I would prefer if it was a proper transliteration, without the "y". But there must be reasons why they chose it, one of my guesses is at the beginning of this post.

>>157552369
Yea, 霧亥 with キリイ as furigana. And sometimes simply as katakana when screaming his name, especially in later volumes.

>I guess it makes sense to use "Kyrii" if it's supposed to be a western-sounding name written using kanji instead of katakana. Like how "愛里寿" is translated as "Arisu" instead of "Alice".
That's not how it works, at all. Furigana is used as a supplement to the text proper. It's used to provide an 'alternative reading' to the script. In many cases, furigana can be used to give a name to a thing; I'll use Fate as an example: 約束された勝利の剣 becomes エクスカリバー in the furigana, as opposed to エクスカリバー being the text proper. Furigana can be written in either hiragana or katakana. Hiragana as furigana is used for pure native words and 'expected' readings, even if they don't match the text by conventional rule. Katakana as furigana tends to be used for *anything* which is not a native word. It doesn't imply Western nature or anything specific; it just implies 'not intended to be read according precisely to the Japanese alphabets'. The distinction between "L" and "R", and the value of the lengths of certain sounds, and so on don't exist in Japanese. You can't double-up on "R"s like you can with "K"s or something. So, the single-R name "Kirii" becomes "Killy" because it can't be explicitly written "Killy" in Japanese.
>>
>>157551937

Funfact: The only people who give a shit about death of the author are idiots who wasted their college education on an English lit degree.
>>
>>157552492
>why are you expecting everyone to obey that concept
It's not a matter of "obey", or even "agree". It is an innate truth. There's nothing to prove or disprove. The points of contention are about its value in application, not its inalienable necessity of accuracy. You can't 'disagree with it', because it's an inherent trait of the world.

>>157552457
>And no, Killy is a not a good substitute. The "ri" syllable is not doubled, so there can't be double L or R. There is also "i" after "ri". Which means it's a doubled sound, best transliterated as double "i".
You don't know what you're talking about. The English word "Harley" is written in Japanese as ハーリー or ハーレー. That's about all I need to say to prove that you don't know what you're on about.

It gives a reading to a nonexistent word. There are multiple readings of both 霧 and 亥. There's nothing assured about those kanji reading as キリイ. For all a blank reader knows, it might be read ボウカイ - until they are given the 'proper' reading from the furigana.

Let's talk about this page for a moment. After Killy's first encounter with the level 9, there are a few pages of his internals restitching themselves and 2 other scenes - one with the girl and dog, and this page. One is clearly a flashback, which implies the other is as well.

The person in the first panel looks suspiciously like Sanakan due to her neck implant, and the third person in the second panel looks suspiciously like Killy due to his height and hunched stance.

Then you factor in Sanakan crying out Killy's name when they first fought in the fishermen arc, as though they had known each other before...

Were Sanakan and Killy ever allies at one point in their long history, and did they fuck? I think the answer is yes and yes.

They can just have Cibo implant the bit she tossed out into the remains of Sanakan and then have her catch up to Killy when he finds TOHA after fighting some cyborgs.

Blame is a pretty fucking good CGI movie, great even. I could only notice the choppiness of animation at the very beginning. Other than that, the pacing, the music, the action, pretty much everything was quite great, and the story served its intended purposes very well.

Yes, it's not a faithful adaptation of the manga at all, but it doesn't have to be. The movie holds very well on its own and we can hope that there will be more in the future.

I also don't get people's complains about Cibo — she didn't seem like a "heartless bitch" to me at all here.

You have to realize, Killy is married to his job. I'm sure Killy cares for Cibo in some way, but his job always comes first. I think she realizes this but knows she really doesn't have anyone else so she had no choice but to become more stoic so she can keep up with him.

The person with two legs in the last chapter is not Killy. It's a Safeguard who is pursuing him. Generally speaking the closer a Safeguard is to humanoid the more skilled and dangerous it is, like we already saw with Sanakan or Dhomo. In that chapter Killy blows up one of his pursuer, who wounded him badly, and we can see from the head of the enemy that it was strikingly human (IT IS NOT CIBO'S FACE) and therefore we must assume it was a special Safeguard agent. Then we see a glimpse of the next pursuer, who has humanoid proportions and a nearly human mouth and jaw, which hints it is also an experienced and dangerous foe. Considering that he auto-headshots Killy in a nanosecond and pretty much comes the closest to killing him out of every enemy in the manga, the foreshadowing that humanlike Safeguard = dangerous is quite justified.

She has explicitly said that she never worked as an assistant before Dorohedoro (or something to that effect). > but she was never a heartless bitch like in the movie.

She's the one who gives the village a new future. So she's not really heartless. Just focused on the task itself.

And Manga Cibo had a major weakness, that being her obsession of seeing the Netsphere with her own eyes. First time she dies because of it, next time it actually manages to screw up things for Killy as well when she accidentally turns into Lvl 9 safeguard.

So if the manga Cibo would have to choose from saving a village or having the opportunity to enter Netsphere, she'd choose the latter because she just can't help it.

They're making a new Devilman movie. And series on the old puppet animation film Dark Crystal. So yeah, they might be. They take a lot of cult-favorite projects under their wing.

I honestly did not expect a big company to do that in this day and age, so honestly Netflix has grown on me a lot as a result. Some CEO there knows what the fuck he's doing.

Hate to say it, but these character designs are superior to Nihei's. Pretty rare for the anime characters to look better then their source material counterparts.
>>
>>157565197
But I do hate him now. That's the key word: now. Any pre-Sidonia Nihei is loved. But the current Nihei is to be hated and reviled. His prior works were made when he was a prior Nihei. They are beloved works. The current Nihei intends to revise those prior works, of the prior Nihei. That is why he is hated. It's not tsundere in any way.

Imagine if someone you loved had a complete mental collapse, lost their former personality, and insisted for the rest of their life that they wanted to harm you and nothing more. Would you still be able to say that you loved that person?

No. I was making a general comparison. I was going to use the Snake volume poem from Bleach, changed my mind halfway through, and made the comparison what it is. I guess that made it a little darker than was intended. Then, here's the volume poem:

You are becoming a snake tomorrow.
And as you start to devour people,
With that mouth that has eaten others,
You cry your love to me.
And the same as today, I do wonder.
Will I be able to say my love to you?

The complaints that I've seen most recently were about squash and stretch, and the flaws of the models made in-house becoming more apparent at higher frame-rates. With the Sidonia tentacles, neither of those major concerns are an issue.

It may or may not be different with humanoid models like Killy and Sanakan - we can't actually know unless we're given a real cut made at a higher frame rate, you know?

You could easily cut a load of the electro-fishers dialog (which is shit) and fit an entire new fight scene in there, would have made the movie better.

If they're already doing the sanakan + safeguards vs killy+cibo+electro fishers confrontation then including the buider vs giant safeguard isn't going to take up much additional time.

It adds TONNES of cool factor for only like a minute of screen time in a battle that they're already including anyway

the builder vs giant safegurd fight is only like 2 pages plus one double spread in the manga but it makes teh whole battle way more epic and exciting than it would be

>I haven't watched the movie but the FUCK were they thinking??

My guess is they're thinking about the budget. The fight at the Toha doorway has hundreds of Exterminators, two massive well-detailed mechs fighting each other, several GBE shots that destroy the fuck out of the surrounding environment in great detail, and Killy shooting his GBE in the highest setting, causing huge structures to collapse in the epic environment.

And thats at the same time he's having a round two with Sanakan.

I'd read somewhere that "Killy" was a reference to the protagonist of Gregory Benford's Great Sky River,

I honestly never read or researched the book because the reference, as you said, was about Cibo. But, now that I have researched it, it is definitely the inspiration for Killy's name. There's absolutely no way that it's not.

For those of you unfamiliar with Great Sky River, this is the summary of the novel, and this is why "Killy" is the absolute, definitive, correct version of his name:

>Nearly 100,000 years after first contact with the machines that dominate the universe, only a few hundred humans survive. Trapped on Snowglade, a barren world near the center of the galaxy, Killeen and his child, Toby, of the Bishop Tribe are primitive scavengers, homeless and hunted by the ruling “mechs”. Then suddenly, a strange cosmic entity – neither organic nor cybernetic or living matter – reaches out from a black hole to speak with Killeen. But can the fallen descendent of starfarers understand this being in time—and seize his only chance to save his family and mankind from final annihilation?

Once again, Melissa Tanaka ruins everything by not doing the research for her work, or even reading the work's original editions.

I don't think I really care to be honest. Sure it would be better if they used the translations I was used to and preferred but its not like I can't just read the word they've put in its place and know what it should say. I doubt you'd ever see anyone new to the series complaining about the translation for example. I think a big part of it is just what people are used to seeing things as and being overly attached to it.

It's the same kind of thing as when somebody says "The only good dub is the DBZ one" because they watched it on TV that way as a kid and are used to it, when you know for a fact that if they just started watching it now they would watch the subbed version and shit on the dub.

If someone is new to something, they are less likely to know anything about it. Of course it wouldn't bother them that the name is Kyrii - they don't know any better.

If I were to spew a bunch of incorrect engineering jargon at you, you wouldn't have a problem with technical problems in what I'd said because you wouldn't be familiar with engineering: it's *new to you*. That doesn't make it wrong for someone who knows what they're talking about to correct me on the incorrect statements that I've made.

It has nothing to do with "being used to it". If that were the case, why don't we still have Tanjiahdo Doflamingo and Xusasu Basasu?

It doesn't. It's not much different. Much of it looks far less polished than the film and the majority of it is action scenes which were often rendered in higher framerates in the actual film. It does look like they put effort into proper timing and posing for the character animation that is there during non action parts though make that look much smoother despite running at the same kind of speed.
>>
>>157567378
>and clearly approved
You're wrong. That doesn't happen and hasn't happened. Ever. Do you, in truth, believe that licensed translation works actually consult anyone in Japan? Be they editors, authors, mangaka - it does not happen. The only people to whom the translators answer are their higher-ups in the company. If some stupid QC fuck says "looks good enough", it goes through into publication. That's it. There is no vetting process, there is no proper consultation, there is no research. People like Melissa Tanaka are freelance translators who are paid by companies to translate a text, and nothing else. She chose "Kyrii" as a translation. Someone at Vertical said it was fine. It was published as Kyrii. Maybe 5 humans, all in the United States, were involved in the "approval" process, and none of them would have any reason to consult the creators.

The movie was a waste of my time for the most part
It should have started with Killy walking around for at least 20 minutes, with shots of the surroundings to create that feeling when you have reading Blame! of being overwhelmed
They should haver also espanded the universe and explained what the fuck "the City" is in reality, and gave a little clue to what happend to earth
If you didn't read Nihei's notes you are fucking clueless about it during the film, what a waste

In general though it's actually the weird 'out of place' stuff in the series that makes it. There's Dhomo's fish and the dog's actually rather strange as well compared to the mutated bugs. And I think there's a big screen somewhere with a picture of a beach that's just there.
>>

Safeguard can appear anywhere with Netsphere activity going on. Thats also their limitation, which prevents them from entering some areas of the City entirely. The closer you get to the nearest Megastructure wall that is tied to Netsphere, bigger the chance Safeguard might appear.

Accessing Netsphere causes them to appear immediatly.

There is, but those "lucky" enough to get their identity within the Netsphere cannot die until they get an actual corporeal body or get erased from the system itself somehow.

So because Netsphere is malfunctioning, most people within are stuck in perpetual sleep mode, and because they have no body to destroy in the real world, they cant really die either.

Its understandable why Safeguard was originally created and why getting to Netsphere is so important, since it offers you the controls to actually control the entire City, plus it can effectively render you immortal, since as long as your data is still within the netsphere, you can die and respawn as many times as you like. And because City can create pretty much anything with its technology, you have almost godlike powers from within the Net.

So makes sense to have some kind of program that hunts for netsphere denizens that have gone rogue, so that somebody doesn't decide to go and intentionally jam multiple Gravity Furnaces at once and cause space and time to implode on itself.

Well yeah. As long as Silicon Creatures, Safeguard or random mutated bionic creatures or Builders aren't harassing you, and you manage to find a food source and know little something about technology, you can make a life there.

Thats what humanity does anyway in Blame 2 when they start getting back the control thanks to Killy succeeding in his quest. Their life is still tribal or nomadic, but theres fewer risks and dangers out there in the metallic wilderness.
>>
>>157578813

The skivvies were technically human. Killy doesn't hesitate when fighting safeguards or silicon life, but if there's a chance that someone might have net terminal genes he holds back.
He also hesitates before firing at the ones on the ship, it wasn't just a one-off thing.
>>
>>157579004

Its because he saw the corpse of the little wildling boy/girl that he rescued from some bionic beast not long before. And he was tricked into escorting it and killing the siblings and the family of the little kid in the process. He's got a bit more compassion than Mad Max, not much but a little bit.
>>

>>
>>157575584
It honestly wouldn't make a difference the animation isn't looking "choppy" because of a lack of frames. It looks choppy because the animators lack of skill and pore poses in keyframes. Adding more frames does very little to improve poor animation if anything in the majority of cases.
>>
>>157578643
there are probably a lot of really nice apartments.

That's the correct 'circular story' interpretation. Thank you for reminding me. How do you remember it, after all this time?

Not saying that it is necessarily *true*, but that it's the proper/original version of the theory in which it is posited that the story loops over.
>>

And hopefully this time he didnt get two Silicon shitheads that ruin his quest and force him to start from scratch again, like in the very first story.

But at that point in the story Killy is still going "up" through the City. If it took place after the final chapter he would have to be "descending" after reaching the edge of the city.

The point of the interpretation is that the kid dies, and gets his genotype corrupted. Dog girl confirms that. Killy has to go back up to find another kid, after all that's happened.

The only significant inconsistency is the gender of the child, and that's somewhat speculative.

Well, irregularities mean not Net Terminal Gene-viable any longer. The new kid at the end is most likely born from the orb, Sanakan told Killy to get to the edge of the city to find a place where the newborn child would not get instantly infected.

By the time Killy would get to the edge of the city and back to his start, would've taken such a long time that I doubt the original kid would be a kid anymore, or even alive.

>I don't believe in the theory. I'm *just* saying that it is technically viable.

Just kind of unlikely. Why would the human kid stay as a kid by the time Killy got back from the edge of the city? The distance by then would be so fast the kid would either be a grandpa in tubes, or stored in backup space entirely.

We are talking about distances where length of the planet Jupiter is just a small part of Killy's road. Him getting back "down" would take tremendous amount of time.

Easier to believe a new kid got born from the orb and Killy escorted the new kid to the closest Netsphere access point.
