Yes. The series thankfully doesn't fall into the crutch of "If you kill them then you are just as bad as them". It's almost like the actual middle ages. The townspeople whose homes are destroyed by collateral damage in the anime are generally fine though.

The SNES one as that is the only one which is translated. The graphics suck as it is a NES game that was ported to the SNES at the last minute, and it wasn't a high budget production in the first place. The humor is all there though, and they communicate it through the mechanics as well as the writing.

I don't think the traditional comics framework of "canon" is the most useful term when talking about Slayers. Their universe is set up as a multiverse as established in the first LN volume, and as Kanzaka approved the anime, manga and video game scripts, in some sense Slayers could be considered as having multiple canons.

My favorite Slayers season was the very first one, so it didn't bother me that they reused Rezo. He was a very interesting villain and you could say that he was a kind of a tragic character. In fact, I really liked that throwback, but I may be biased, because I really enjoyed how the first season got really serious at times compared to the goofiness of the later ones. I especially enjoted the relationship between Rezo and Eris in particular. It was something that hit me hard in the end.

With the revival of Rezo, the new season also gave more depth to Zelgadis' character. It's been a while, but I remember there was an episode which had a retrospective focused on him, when he was still human. That one episode focused mainly on his old mates, like the werewolf Dilgear for instance, before everyone met up with Lina. That was a nice touch that I really enjoyed. I didn't expect a throwback like that.

I don't think that Rezo again was that egregious. It is more that the scenes and general writing are half assed. You had intially some of the dumbest character motivations ever to be aired, all for it to be handwaved by "It was demon magic!". I will concede that Zuuma never had a very substantial motivation in the LNs either, but Duclis at least didn't go into a falacious speech about being wronged in the middle of a fight.

The final battle was half assed as well. Despite everything prior implying otherwise, shooting dragon slave around somehow at away at Shabby's physical form. In the end none of that matter, as Lina just chucked giga slave at him in while hoping that she didn't inadvertently destroy the world, and it didn't because the plot demanded it. The LNs on the other hand had Lina actually strategize and not use Giga slave. Rather shit got real with Lina dual wielding ragna blades and using equivalents of dragon slave from other realms of existence. It was, for a lack of better words, interesting and new.

Overall I think that Revo/Evo weren't that bad, but the writing was hafl assed compared to the original series. Bits that didn't have anything to do with the actual plot like the filler was OK. I would recommend watching it if you want more Slayers. The outrage is understandable as the ending of Try set up the series perfectly to adapt the later LNs. Instead we got what we got, with Gourry pulling another sword of light out of nowhere instead of getting the nifty blast sword.

That episode with Zel's backstory was one of my favorites of the newer seasons. That 15yo animeverse Zel was a kind of male Amelia isn't what I had imagined for him, but after thinking about it I guess it makes sense. (LNverse Zel would probably have a different kind of past self since he was older when he was transformed.) I wish they had found a way to include that part, and his coming to peace with his past, without rehashing Rezo all over again.

A lot of people hate the last two seasons, and some hate the third season. I think the first three are must-watches, although I found the third to not be as fun as the first two due to some lower quality filler in the later half. The last two seasons (Revolution and Evolution-R) are a mess because of an annoying mascot OC, an incoherent, meandering plotline, and poor utilization of novel material, but I still found parts of it enjoyable.

The only good part of the Rev/Evo was that assassin guy. That spent all that time building him up and then you see his fucked up backstory then they're gearing up for a final serious battle against him and then Xellos swoops in and one-shots him.
