The "romance" in Bakuman has to be the biggest load of horse shit I've ever seen. And the rest of the plot is mostly chuuni nonsense as well, so Shirobako wins for been somewhat grounded despite refusing to show the reality of the in dusty.

I didn't like the lead pairing in Bakuman (seems more like it was written that way to avoid writing any romance), but the beta couples were decent iirc. Like that the one male lead was married and in a good relationship the whole time, and then there was that subplot with Aoki and Hiramaru or whatever (even though I liked her with the long hair guy).

Bakuman shit the bed so hard it's not even funny.

They had talent, emotional support form friends and family, free professional manga studio, and motivation in form of pussy as a reward for all the "hard work". That said as someone who is currently engaged and who had a good share of bf before that, I didn't think Kaya and the one male lead was unrealistic at all. Felt about right. Aoki and Himamaru was unrealistic but in an entertaining way.

I don't think the anime adapation is particularly well done, especially the first season. It put way too much focus on the flimsy romance, with the opening song and the general tone you could easily mistake the series for a shitty shoujo/romcom. I remember it turn some people off when it aired.

Yeah the lead couple was famously stupid and weird way to write a romance. I think its the authors' way of having that neat shounen gf to end the series on but not wanting to write any actual romance or relationship development. So instead they ignore each other because......shounen goals.

They both sucked. Bakuman added useless romance and Shirobako was pretty much just cute girls doing cute things at work.

Pretty much. Azuki herself has some neat stories and shit, but the actual romance between her and Mashiro only exists for plot reasons. The manga doesn't dwell too much on that issue and all other characters pretty much always comment that they're just a pair of weirdos, so I don't mind it too much.

I think Bakuman could have had an arc where the main characters had to work under an apathetic editor like that tanuki guy from Nozaki. Miura was good but I felt like he really cared about the guys but was too incompetent to help them. I want them to have to deal with someone who really didn't give a shit about them.

I liked Miura. He was shit at his job and shit at managing them but I liked the conflict he created and thought it was realistic. Ashirogi honestly lucked out with god editor Hattori as a starting editor. Compared to Hattori Miura obviously sucks dick but he knows he sucks dick, he wants to stop sucking dick and he's eventually willing to throw his pride out the window to do that. He's a good foil for Hattori and the main duo.
