Well, the term is a "natural", a character that can't really read the mood. One of Sakura's main points is being empathetic, so the two are different there. Even if they get along pretty good.

If you wanted to say what both have in common, it's that they enjoy their food and Sakura in particular has good talents for picking up recipes into her collection.

You only have to look at Hollow to see how happy it makes Saber to have someone who likes to try different recipes out on people, and Sakura enjoys having someone around who doesn't judge a girl liking to have a good meal and chilling instead of starving themselves. So that is where they mesh well.

I mean, I watched the Deen anime before UBW was translated, and didn't play the VN until it was, so you're technically correct in that I watched the thing available in my language before the expensive book was in English.

Yeah, she does it in self defense for Shinji and... I guess Gilgamesh, but being HUNGRY and scared doesn't make a good character. And murder is still murder. She kills Shinji. She's stock Nasu rape victim, but spends too much time sucking mana to be as tolerable as Fujino and is a wide margin from being Kohaku. She's a boring lead that will cause the end of the world. I view HF as the Ilya/Kotomine arc because Sakura is boring.
Again, character blind. I kind of hate her. Maybe she's not so bad (only murders like two people before the third act) but the obvious answer is kill Sakura, become hero. Not even trying to get the bad ends I went for every opportunity to end her.

She suffers a bit from not having her originally intended route, but her being brought up to hate and kill Shirou for the Einzberns and win the war, then learning the actual truth about Kiritsugu and Shirou and coming to appreciate him as her brother rather than resenting him is a pretty clear theme of HF and to a lesser extent Fate.

At first, she keeps information to herself and uses things about characters they don't even know about themselves to manipulate them (such as her killing Shirou in a bad end to use him against the "other grail", later revealed to be Sakura), but as she gets another perspective of Shirou than the one the Einzberns fed her, she realizes she values his happiness over that of the Einzberns or even her own, and so she begins to support him in her own way, as well as helping Sakura make heads and tails of her situation by telling her about her link to the grail.

Even so, though, Ilya isn't so much a "good guy" as she's a neutral supporting Shirou. She values Shirou over even herself, but she still despises Rin for being a Tohsaka, and she only really tolerates Sakura despite being a Matou because she knows she's objectively the best kind of woman for Shirou. The way Ilya develops from what seems to be a batshit crazy evil loli to a far more nuanced and selfless, yet not generically "good" person makes her a very interesting character among the many F/SN characters who are either clearly good or clearly evil. Rider is similar in a way, but she's not explored very well as a character until F/HA, sadly.

Eh, I buy that. It's apparent in retrospect in Fate I guess, after the events of HF, but yeah that's a good summary of her character. I've never delved super hard into her character personally. Guess I just value different qualities in characters. I see Rin's struggle to deal with what are essentially her two ethnicities and moral compasses more interesting than Ilya's change of heart and realization. Doesn't mean it's not there though. I remember her more from Fate. Maybe it's just that I don't remember HF as much, which is weird; aside from hating Sakura I loved the arc.

That was Angra Mainyu, not her. The reason she snaps and goes dark after Shinji's death is in part because it's the first death she herself rather than the shadow caused, which makes her believe there's no salvation for her anymore.

Kohaku is great, but there's no denying Kohaku did a bunch of needlessly terrible shit that really makes it ridiculous to claim she was better than Sakura. For example, Kohaku was already saved by the time the story started, and yet she went out of her way to keep her other tormentor alive in order to... kill the one who saved her.

She may be boring if you expect a generic action heroine like Saber or Rin, but if you take the time to analyze her thought processes, she's really interesting. The cycle of her wrestling with self-hatred and the trauma of what happened to Kariya, yet still wanting to cling to hope of attaining happiness with Shirou now that it's finally been offered to her, followed by frustration and hatred at the things and people getting in the way of it, and then yet more guilt and self-hatred for harboring those violent thoughts is something that her interludes set up, but people far too often only cherrypick those flashes of negative thoughts and call her a bad person because of it, when that's a really ignorant analysis of her character. Add her complex relation with Rin to that, and you have yourself a really deep character. Also, despite commonly being viewed as being passive, Sakura is the one who kills the most villains.

Personally, I found Sakura's excessive clinginess annoying.

That's a matter of opinion. Yeah her efforts were needless from the perspective of "I'm saved lets live," but she wasn't coming from that perspective. Her goal was to ruin everything for everyone. Everyone was on the docket for revenge. Her entire life was centered around her hatred, resentment, and need for revenge in the same way you're claiming Sakura struggled with hope and hopelessness.

I still disagree, but that's me. I don't think she's a bad person (when she's possessed doesn't really count) but I still think she's boring, but those are my priorities. She plays a passive roll in all the stories, never acting. Yeah, her perspective is interesting, but her actions are bland and unrealized. She's assaulted, acts subservient, and what? And who does Sakura of her own volition kill? Shinji and... who? Avenger gets Gil, Kotomine does to Shirou, Saber and Berseker dies to Shirou, Zouken dies and has a moment of clarity speaking with activated-Ilya. What other villains does she dispose of? I forget who nabs Hassan.

I still think Rin and Saber are more interesting, in or out of a shounen action narrative. Rin doesn't really change over the course of the story like Shirou or Saber usually does, but she's strongly established.

Or Saber. She spends all of Zero having her world view shit on by her piers and her Master, even having her honor used as a tool when Lancer is forced to kill himself. She realizes slowly how powerless she is and how correct others are as she's confronted by Berserker, the result of her actions. She doesn't know how to fix everything or how to move forward and gives up, but Berserker runs out of mana so she takes the killing blow, and all she can offer Berserker is "I don't know what else to do so I'm going to do that".
She's a textbook case of affirmation bias. She's shown evidence of what she's doing wrong, and doubles down on her beliefs as a defense mechanism. It's not until Fate that she gets a reflection in Shirou (stubborn, self destructive, somewhat delusional), and they both get to face reality in Fate. She even accepts her role as the destroyer of the thing she sought and won't entertain an alternative to breaking the grail and fading away.

Transposed onto another narrative, a character dealing with self imposed stresses from families gone and social pressures, or a person who breaks down and doesn't have anything else to hold onto so they dig their heels in, both of these are more interesting than someone written like Sakura.

I see what you're saying about her, but the way she's written is boring. A character that is abused and is tormented by guilt and hope and hopelessness sounds cool. I just don't see it in Sakura, who does very little to affect the world she inhabits and then snaps, effectively becoming a completely different character.

I like Arturia {spoiler] as well as Nero and Jeanne[/spoiler] A LOT, but I feel like her character is cheapened a lot with all those Saberfaces (around half of which are really just Arturia in a different dress but treated as a separate character anyway because muh AU I guess?) running around since they are such obvious cashgrabs and/or give the Saber-haters reason to bash her based on her clones rather than her own merits.
