Yes and no.

Reading the manga will fill in you on some of the clues and the general 'the fuck is going on' and will put the whole movie in better context.

On the other hand the movie explains just enough so it can be it's separate thing but you will feel it's a part of something bigger. It also chagned up some stuff to make it easier for a newcomer.

I started in on the series with the reprint. The translation was off putting, for sure, but only became awful when compared to Tokyo Pop. At any rate, only being at volume 3 of said reprint, I hope the poor translation doesn't hurt the overall work too much. After all it seems to be more about enjoying the mega-structure and monster/cyborg designs.

Maybe you pre existing manga reader fans were disappointed but from the perspective of someone new to the franchise the world was fascinating and I immediately bought the manga after watching. Maybe the dialogue was a bit spoonfeedy at times but anime can be so much worse regularly. The CG animation is probably the best Polygon have ever done when trying to be anime like too.

Well they pretty much kill the kid. And the kid actually had net terminal genes too. So the story begins from Killy's first major failure of successfully retrieving them. Takes a pretty long time until he even stumbles across someone with netsphere genes again.

You can notice how the movie got some elements from the second story, the one with the flying Watchers that just stare tribesmen to death. A lot of minor details in the movie are taken from various books, like the food bars are from the first one. And the "make everything room"- is basically taken from vol.9.

And Killy had already began the journey with Cibo in vol 2. Electro-fishers get introduced in vol.3, and in a completely separate megastructure entirely.

Well, not really. She's an android like him, only not a combat-oriented one. Which is why Cibo often gets killed but manages to get clever and steal new bodies for herself. Ands the first time they meet in the manga, she's literally a talking corpse so obviously she's not "human" either.

First time she screws up the "stealing bodies"-process is when her old obsession of seeing the Netsphere with her own eyes comes up. She steals Davine's ID when Davine gets shot to the head, and reaches out to the Netsphere, accidentally downloading a body of Lvl 9 Safeguard on herself. So thanks to her weakness this time her new body ruins everything, and leaves her mind corrupted.

Killy is the prototype for what would eventually become special safeguard. He has legal authority in equal to the NetSphere Authority. Which is why, when Sanakan attempts to forcibly register Killy as a Safeguard Agent under her control, the process fails--because Sanakan lacks the capacity (authority) to overrule Killy's own directives.

Killy is, within the pre-safeguard and Safeguard/post-chaos, system, the only entity that has ABSOLUTE autonomy. His motive and intents are pure: find NTGs, make them connect with an NetSphere, and halt the rampant growth and chaos. Of course Killy is not Safeguard, he's decommissioned, custom modified, illegal ex-Safeguard. Obviously an older model too, since he's very similar to Dhomochevsky who is another old model "Safeguard".

He doesn't get all the cool new-Safeguard swag like doll minions, black wings, nano-machine needles and hands that eat GRE-shots. In the manga Sanakan is more powerful than him and it takes outside intervention (usually by Cibo) for him to beat her. Because he's the older model. Only reason he hasn't died as often as Sanakan is that he's managed to dodge every single fatal shot from GBE (Pcell's sword strike narrowly misses his head), while not being so lucky with everything else.

Negative. When she's killed by Killy the first time, the Net Sphere in an intermediate reality manages to capture her data before it gets dumped into the temporary storage space. They then repurpose her into protecting Cibo and the embryonic sphere. She does this as a special safeguard, while fighting against increasingly evolving Silicon life--until she finally dies.

However, within the intermediate reality, there isn't sufficient privileges for upload of her data into Net Sphere space. As such, they can revive her one final time and at her disposal, give her the full complimentary tools of The Authority--but warn her that should she die, they will no longer be able to revive her. Despite the risks, she accepts and downloads back into base reality. This is because she is aware of the SIGNIFICANCE of the embryonic sphere that Cibo carries (something the new silicon life society is unaware off). So she returns, more powerful than before, more capable than before and BTFOs the silicon life society--up until, the Safeguard system downloads into base reality an Exterminator First Class (this thing is even MORE powerful than the illegally downloaded Level 9 Safeguard; we're talking, this fucker can alter space-time and create pocket dimensional prisons with the flick of its wrist (like the one it used to temporarily prevent movement of Killy.))

During this final fight, when Killy is trapped, the Exterminator First Class recognizes that Killy is an even greater threat than Sanakan (despite how utterly powerful Sanakan is). As a result, it attempts to kill him first. However, Sanakan in an act of sacrifice, redirects the attack meant to kill Killy onto her, while simultaneously purging enough of the reality warping prison, that Killy could power his GBE to Level 4 EXTRA and obliterate the Exterminator First Class.

Equally, Sanakan is a representative of the Governing agency, whereas Killy is the ABSOLUTE authority (and agent) of the Governing agency in base reality.

The Governing Agency, which is a subset of the higher Authority of Net Sphere, states that their contract with her has effectively expired. But, because they have good will amongst each other, should she choose to exercise her right to return to base reality, designed for war, she can if she wishes.

Not who you've been talking to, but my understanding was that Killy was essentially a precursor to what would *eventually* turn into the Safeguard. He was created to be as powerful a force as possible for the Authority, and the Safeguard based much of itself on him. This being sci-fi, however, they couldn't make something as powerful as the prototype, which is why he's such an important asset for the Authority.

Killy isn't the only one with GBE tech. Pcell is a Silicon Creature with the Graviton Sword. And not all levels are blocked by a Megastructure wall. Killy ascended 6000 levels before he had to shoot a hole through a Megastructure wall.

Precursor, another name for a prototype.

Funny thing is Sanakan is more powerful than Killy, wins him in a duel, and has tons of other abilities on top of that. Makes sense for a newer model to be superior to a prototype. Usually takes more than one person to take down Sanakan.

First time Killy gets saved from Sanakan blowing his head off by the Electro-fishers. Second time Cibo bottlenecks Safeguard power source and causes her to spasm, giving Killy time to shoot her. Third time Killy throws Sanakan inside Toha, booting her off from her body. Fourth time Sanakan gets distracted both by Cibo and her primary objective which is to disable the central AI of Toha, so Killy gets a clear shot on her.
