Need advice on two things. I'm working on a finished series, and the author uploaded a bunch short comics on their twitter/pixiv. Since most of my readers comes from online reading sites, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to upload those to online readers as if they were part of the manga.

I tried using a japanese scanning service.
I used 電子化本家. You're supposed to use it with 5 books minimum so it ends up being like 150 yen/book, but you can choose a special 1 book option for about 450 yen that gets done in 24 hours. Price isn't too bad if you're in a hurry.

I know most people here won't like the quality, but I just want these to read them for myself without having to spend extra on forwarding, shipping fees, plus having to scan it myself, so it's good enough. Might as well share them though. Also it was originally a pdf and I just converted it with an online tool, not sure if that affects the image.
Need more options so I'm going to try other services as well.

Use bun tool if you want scan at that size to look good.
Or make size smaller, use Topaz, then level a little to your liking, then use select color range, shrink ii on 2 pix, use lasso and ctlr to remove selection from the whole grass texture, then level, remove selection, downsize to needed size, level again, use unsharp mask, and save.

There's more specifications on their page, you'd have to read it all carefully. Also I think there's a page limit, like 350 pages. A lot of sites don't do hardcovers so you'd have to check that.

But even if they don't, there's a lot of other places out there so I'm sure one of them would work. I'm going to try スキャンピー and スキャンサポート仙台, I think the latter could do artbooks.

Yeah, you need to know how to use the command line. The correct way to use it is:

pdfimages.exe file.pdf . -j

the dot means it's going to extract in the current folder, -j means it should preserve jpeg files. Otherwise you will get those weird .pbm files, they can be viewed in IrfanView just fine but still.

These panels confused the hell out of the Japanese friends I asked to take a look at it.

Anyways, I bought all of Ganbare Genki raw last week and started reading through it. Wonderful series, on par with the best parts of Ashita no Joe from the beginning. Scanlations were dropped about 40 chapters in, but the translation that exists is so painfully overwritten that it's almost worth going back and redoing the previous 40 chapters.

Start translating from chapter 41 (and go back later to retranslate earlier chapters?), or just start from chapter 1?

It will fuck up font size if you already typeset it. I mean it won't change visually, but it's a pain in the ass to deal with it. Same with resizing. Typesetting scan with say x1200 resolution and 600 dpi is pure travesty. You should try it.

I've read the first 2 volumes. Aside from some moments with miss Bigtits McGee (who isn't even the focus half of the time) the rest of the manga is quite boring, even for Slice of Life standard.

Little technical question about Photoshop (CS6)

I know it might sound like a stupid question, but can I set up Font profiles/presets? Like, I select a preset and I have only the fonts I need for the particular thing I'm working on? I'm doing something that has a lot of different fonts and I have about 2000 fonts, so it's sort of shit to scroll through all of them.

It might help to know that you can select in the font name area, then type out the name of the font so you don't have to scroll. A guy in one of these threads mentioned you can use the character styles window to set up font sizes/type. Like having a style named shouts and it swaps to font X size Y etc. I haven't messed with it though as I just do what I said first.

How would a garbage person with no knowledge of japanese get into scanlation? I can use photoshop and various other adobe/editing programs, but where should i start?

I want to round up all the badly editted doujins that were done by people who didn't know what they were doing at the time and make them acceptable.

Pardon the meta question but why do you people scanlate? I know there are several motivations for people.

Some people do it for e-peen and minor celebrity.
Some people do it to give back to the community.
Some people do it because it gives them a sense of accomplishment and purpose that they do not have IRL.
Some people do it because they enjoy the work and take pride in it.
One guy I work with, I kid you not, admitted that he sees himself as a street-level superhero whose anonymous contributions "bring happiness to people."

It's good practice.
I can bullshit my way through a work when reading it myself, but I can't do that when I'm writing a translated script for it.
It really lets me make sure I fully understand what's going on in the work.

I like cleaning, working with HD raws gives me a boner. There's also that feel you get when you read something good and would like to share it with others, but can't right away since most people don't read moonrunes, so translating it to a global language allows the work to be more exposed. I enjoy translating, when I'm allowed to, at least. Working in a group means I usually get stuck with boringass typesetting/cleaning/redrawing, so I only get to translate for solo projects.
Redrawing can be enjoyable under the right circumstances, when there's enough art to go off of, and enough leeway that I don't feel pressured to make it look perfect.

Get a sample first, send it to your kindle for pc. Download calibre and google calibre remove drm. when using it to convert make sure you select page setup tablet. Whatever resolution it outputs is what you get. It varies greatly. Average seems to be 1200

Sorry. To confirm I meant image editing. It might take a translator 40 seconds to read and translate the page, but it can take easily 15 minutes to clean, rotate, typeset etc. Redrawing can add hours.

The real question is why would you even want to do that? Unless you're one of those bottom rung translators, you're better off going corporate and translating office documents for MNCs.
