There was a over 90% drop but it happened over the course of 150 years and is part of the hack writing unless they just forgot to mention that there was a horrible space plague, which actually isn't that unrealistic since pathogens would evolve independently on every planet and when it spreads to another planet that wouldn't have it's human population building up immunities like on the native pathogen planet, then bad things happen. Unfortunately that theory doesn't work because Phezzan would have been ground zero for most of that shit and Phezzan's population saw steady increase.
