Do you feel bad for the youngsters today who don't have the context of viewing anime from 20 years ago back when they were still brand new?
>>
No faggot

>>157443571
20 years ago watching anime was pretty much limited to what aired on your local TV stations, screw that it's way better now.
>>
No, anime is easier to watch than ever

Online video was pretty non-existent in that era. You pretty much had to buy to get anything that was watchable in quality.

Don't forget those who pirated the VHS and you saw that noise at the beginning or middle of the tape due to copying too many times from one source.

Getting a h-videos on VHS was fun.

This.

Back then I had to literally buy anime and would only watch few shows per year. It was a dark age and I wouldn't wish that upon my worst of enemies.

Things only got really bearable in the early 00s.
>>
>>157443571
I only feel bad that modern fans will get mad if a new anime isn't subbed within 3-4 hours, sometimes even less when they will never understand what it's like to not even know if the group would sub that week, let alone what time
>>
>>157443571
the only things that have been "lost" are:
1. spirit of experimentation and optimism in the anime industry (due to long term economic decline)
2. resourceful first wave adopters (not hipsters)

I am shocked at how people seem to miss the "early days". I mean, don't get me wrong, I miss "fansubbing" as like an actual thing that existed and was prominent but think about all the stuff that we don't have to deal with anymore like group names all over the place, overly delayed releases and the like

I miss when fanfiction was more widespread and read. These days it gets a lot of hate because of its quality, but back in the 90s when you weren't sure of when the next ep you'd watch would show up, you could jump back into a show anytime, meet the characters you fell in love with again. I think people today don't get that

I miss when anime fan-sites (or even just fan-sites in general) were a thing. Now it seems that everything has its own bland Wiki and that's it. There's no creative flair or unique content that was necessary for sites to set themselves apart from their peers.

>>157447959
There's a lot of inconvenient shit that I wouldn't want to go back to, but I do miss when fansubbing was mostly something that was done out of an actual passion, instead of how jaded it feels today. A lot of subbers seem like they're only doing it for e-fame and to lord it over the people who want to watch the show. It gets fucking irritating when they're half way through a series and they start complaining about how hard it is and the toll it's taking on them to continue to do it like a dramafag. 10-12 years ago, people would just go "Sorry guys, I'm just not feeling this series and don't feel like I'm the right fit for it" or "Life shit came up and I need to step away for now, if anyone wants to continue, go for it" instead of acting like some tortured savior who's putting themselves through it for the greater good in an attempt to get showered with praise.

Aw fuck yes, I remember trying to watch early Naruto on Youtube, but the channel would only have (for example) Episode 3 Part 1/3 and Episode 3 Part 3/3, so I'd have to find 2/3 on some other guy's channel, but he split the episode differently, so I end up missing a chunk of content from the first half of the episode between parts 1 and 2, and then there's a 5-minute overlap of content in parts 2 and 3.

I first started watching anime around year 2000. The few VHS releases I had as a child don't really count. I came to anime too late for VHS sharing, if that even was a thing in my country.
If I remember correctly, we got a 768kbit/s ADSL "broadband" back around 1999-ish. It was pretty early and it was expensive, like $200/month.
Trying to download blurry videos on DC++ required quite a
lot of patience, but that's where i got most of my videos. It's never fun when people put fake names on videos. You want anime, you get shitty porn.
>>
>>157443571
Back then I would consume any form of the media. I remember renting/buying anime from the video store, getting copies from swap meets and looking for anything Japanese in comic book stores. It was fun in a way and rewarding. I feel like since everything is at our finger tips we don't appreciate it as much.
>>
>>157443571

I imagine anime fandom then were full of neckbeard richfags

Those who were really rich can afford Laserdisc anime, and those who wanted to keep up with latest releases have "high speed" 56k internet and use /g/ tier applications like IRC or USENET to download broadcast anime

I can't speak for the 90s, but I was a teen in 2003 and I remember going on IGN's anime board. You'd get banned right away for hinting at piracy. All the talk was about buying anime, so I got into buying anime -- or at least I kinda tried to. The first anime I bought was RahXephon. It was like $150+ for the entire series.

I remember buying Princess Nine because it was like $35 for the entire series. Then I never watched it. I was so dumb with money. Still am, but at least I don't buy anime now.

The only thing I kind of miss is watching mediocre and obscure anime that would air on TV because I assume getting the rights to air them was pretty cheap or getting VHS tapes with subbed stuff. There was something more mystifying about anime back then since it wasn't so widespread so you'd pretty much take anything you were offered no matter how bad it was.
But feeling bad for people not experiencing that? Hell no, now you get access to pretty much anything you want and even get to choose when and what you want to watch is a godsend.

You won't even know what's going to hit you. I've been reading about blockchain technology since there's huge japanese interest in cryptocurrency right now, it's going to make it so that every site you visit is recorded publicly and you pay to watch every show.
I think it'll be cheap at first to aid adoption, but it won't take long for them to ratchet up prices. Torrenting will die because you'll have to pay for the episode if you download it and there will be no more anonymous transactions.
Granted, it may sound insane to people who don't understand the technology but I think the future of anime is going to be bright in some ways. Greater acceptance as the SJWs gain prominence and the chinese get even more dedicated to it as we become a more lonely society, but at the same time we'll all be miserable NEETs living on stable government paid incomes.

Cryptocurrencies are a doomed idea because fiat currency will always be better in every conceivable way as you can actually do things like monetary policy. (now if only governments would actually remember this.)
>>
>>157456155
Because murdering the right people is too hard and murdering the wrong people just makes things worse.
>>
>>157456340
Actually each cryptocurrency has it's own monetary policy. And you can program it. There's lots of applications even if it isn't adopted as currency for ID, transferring money across national borders for cheap, legal contracts, etc.
Governments have monetary policies, they do things like SHADOW DERIVATIVES intentionally to make money look like there's more money when there is really less money you can just spend more.

Over-satiation kinda sucks. I feel something changed for me when I discovered seasonal charts. Before that, I'd just cluelessly try out anything I saw anyone mention, and I'd end up watching a lot of crap and loving all of it. Then I got to /a/ and found one of those chart threads, and I'd be fucking amazed at how much interesting stuff there was in just a single season. So I had to start prioritizing so I could get through it. Suddenly every single show I watch needs to be judged in terms of whether it's more worthwhile than other shows I could be watching.

You'd think I could just pick the top shows from that whole pool, but without any reliable measure, I just end up in constant doubt with every show of whether it's actually good enough to justify watching it.

I was too young for the VHS wave, but i remember downloading shit on limewire and having it take 100 hours. As well as using torrents back when they were barely used, trying to forward ports to avoid NAT errors because UPnP was shit back then. I was real young but computer savy. Used to download games and anime so slowly. A 1gb game would take me like 1-3 days.

That and when i had anime i had to run it through 50 fucking converters in order to burn it onto a dvd with relatively good quality. Created a lot of coasters trying to get the best quality vs space. This was all in 5th-6th grade. Torrents are so sick now in comparison.

Anime and manga are readily available now with internet speeds fast enough to download them in a few minutes. Sure, younger people aren't able to appreciate the sheer quantity of content at their fingertips but I hardly think not having to experience downloading a title you've never heard of only to get a bungshow or something entirely unrelated is worth feeling bad for.

At least with a few titles here and there with CR/Daisuki subs, anime viewers today can appreciate the same guessing game that were more common in older fansubs.

I was born just in time to experience the anime boom of the 90's and I have mixed feelings about that time period. On one hand, I miss the feeling anime used to give me. I would record every episode of Yu Yu Hakusho on VHS and rewatch it so many times I could quote the dialogue right along with the characters yet it never lost the sense of wonder and adventure it had the first time I watched it. I was already reading Inuyasha by the time it aired on AdultSwim and I remember hyperventilating in excitement when the first episode came on (I was like 11 or 12, cut me some slack). I definitely miss that intense pleasure anime used to give me and I wish I could get that back.

But on the other hand, I don't miss how overpriced everything was. I only had a handful of VHS's because they were too expensive for my grandma to buy for me. I don't miss the struggle of trying to find out about shows or, worse, trying to track them down. I had a few anime magazines and I would voraciously read through them but the chances of me watching any of those shows back then was slim to none. Early internet was a joke with rumors and lies being presented as facts, it was almost impossible to tell what was real. Like the rumor about Sailor Moon being R rated in Japan because the girls are actually naked in the henshin scenes. Or I remember my cousin telling me that Chibiusa was canonly supposed to be strawberry blonde but pink was the closest color they could get to that, which I'm sure she read on some fan site. Like, theres definitely still misinformation today but nothing like it was back then. Also early torrenting was another kind of hell that I wouldn't wish on anyone so we really do have it much better off now. Anime is so accessible today that I would honestly take the current state of things over getting that feeling back simply because there was too much shit to wade through back then. If I want to watch something I just find a torrent for it and call it a day. Theres no guessing.

disagree. it's like videogame magazines. they were better than what we have now, which is just a bunch of sites that post little blips throughout the day. it's like eating a bunch of snacks instead of a full meal. it's not satisfying. and tv tended to curate and filter out the rubbish. that meant more actual good shows, especially ones that pandered more to western tastes, as opposed to moeshit.

Because fansubbing is mostly dead anyway, and they're basically just providing free subs to anyone who knows how to work a torrent.

I agree with that first part. There are anime movies I remember seeing as a kid that, at this point, I'm certain only exist in my head. A lot of bloody mecha stuff.
>>
>>157444453
Man, I remember that all you could do back then on 56k is to download animes' opening and glorious 320/240 video in RMBV format.

Fuck that shit. I am not going back.

This thread makes me feel bad because the only thing I used Limewire for was downloading software and video games.

I didn't have the privacy to download any porn, or videos back then because my computer was right in the living room right next to the kitchen, on top of that my parents probably would've found it and I was already in hot water for telling homework to fuck off in favor or computer time.

You know that there's like a stupidly low split going towards the studios, right?

IIRC crunchy keeps +80%.
>>
>>157469296
apparently. shows how much otakus respect the people who entertain them. they just think of them as anime producing machines who don't need to make an income.

If you actually want to support the studios, BUY BDS. Holy shit it's not that complicated.

How far do you think 20% of your $60 (spread out between every single studio that has a show on Crunchy) a YEAR goes compared to $90 a BD?

Fuck that shit. You had a good chance to get porn anyway using limewire and a 50% chance of getting what you actually wanted.

It's fairly old so not really. I remember the only way for me to access the internet way back and all the way until 2004 was with some prepaid internet cards so you needed to download and navigate shit fast before your "time" got over. Bad memories.

Well the companies that make it fell the same way. Have you seen how little animators are paid.

even japan knew the horror of AOL.
>>
One thing I do sort of miss about VHS days was that things weren't really overrated or underrated, because they weren't 'rated' at all. Unless you went on Usenet or a convention, you didn't really know what was "supposed" to be good or bad. This led to people trying movies and shows that they might not otherwise try, sometimes good, sometimes bad (e.g., pic related).

These days you'll usually have a nice consensus on a new show just a few hours after it airs, which too many people rely on.

I always thought that the biggest thing that would happen to the medium outside of Japan would be the ability to watch "together" as we did with prime time television rather than people's viewing experiences being staggered apart by months at a time. In retrospect, I'm not sure it really improved the experience much at all.
>>
>>157469344
It doesn't really matter how much goes to who, because the studios agreed to what was going where. It's better to get 20% of something than 100% of nothing. If anything they advertise the products (sex pillows and keyring etc al)

Literally how I got into anime for real (IE, discovering it online with subs, not just stuff that aired on TV) in my early teens

>Naruto airs on Toonami
>Think it's super cool
>Goes on break for some reason I can't remember
>Want to watch more, look up when the next episode airs
>"What the heck? The episode is on Youtube already? Hmmm, well for some reason it's in another language"
>"Holy the OP is totally different, but it sounds better! And the voices sound better and...WHAT THE FUCK, THERE'S LIKE OVER 100 EPISODES ON HERE?"

And that's how I descended into today

>anime shrines
