I feel like "because it looks weird" is literally the most casual/newbie of an excuse you can get. Yeah sure I can get why people who dont watch much anime would be detoured from something like Mononoke or Kaiji because theres literally no shows that look like it, at least in the west. But as you watch more anime that barrier is totally destroyed.
For me personally I never liked that "excuse" to begin with, it certainly never applied to me, but I can see where they're coming from as people who havent watch very much anime
