I think the timing was weird, following on the heels of the massively successful live action film, along with Hamasaki's style (even if it wasn't as stark as usual) making it less accessible. I heard the anime sequel film underperformed as well, which is weird.

And yeah, like you said, the QUALITY in the latter half of the show probably didn't help it either.

Crime edge was great, regalia was ok but boring at times, mushibugyo was fantastic, ai mail mi is a short and actually made enough to get another season or two, hand shakers was so fucking bad it was hilarious, rurumo was ok but author swim on success of his other manga, mangirl was a short but meh, big order was fun unlike manga, alderamin was shit, magical regret was so fucking bad but the ED was so fucking good, chaos dragon was meh, gay cyclists was ok, cq-bu was fun.

Changed things around too much, made the kid the MC and made him obnoxiously annoying.

They should have followed with the original campaign, it was really fun. Urobuchi's and Nasu's characters fight was an amazing climax and concluded perfectly.

Honest question, do adaptations truely do better than originals in the long run?

I've always assumed adaptations outnumber them 12 to 1 simply cause they're easier for studios to do, rather than come up with an original story, but does the public really not care about exploring unknown waters at this point?

Not just about being easier but when a manga is already selling well, you're expecting the anime to sell well too. There is less risk in that and risk is the key word in the anime industry because the production committee model is there to prevent big losses from the dozens of flops we get each year. It's similar to portfolio diversification in stock investment.

There is more money in originals, because the production committee owns the IP and sells licenses for merchandising which is where the money really is. Animation studios are only there to do animation, they don't own the work, they're a contractor. That is unless they're part of the production committee.

Motherfucking Fractale is a bestseller when compared to those.
