Yeah the two Bleach light novelists have written 2 novels set after manga which is tying up a few of the questions we had with the manga's conclusion. The last novel is by the Durarara/baccano author Narita and hasn't had a physical release announced yet but we're getting a few chapters to read biweekly for free which are the ones getting translated.

Backgrounds usually don't give a lot, if anything, to the story and take a shitton time to do. They have their place in establishing the setting, or if a fight really utilizes the world around, but usually it's just a clutter Especially in comics. Just yesterday i read one of my first comics and holy fuck everything is cluttered and ugly and bad. What is it with comic books that they feel the need to use the transition shots for expressions and as a result everyone looks uglier than any person alive.

Scenery porn artists like Nihei will fight valiantly, drawing ever more intense and minutely detailed backdrops as other mangaka eschew having backgrounds and dimensional planes and shit in favor of just drawing characters striking cool poses on blank background. 1000-year geniuses like Yabuki will invent new ways to have an MC trip inside an empty void and land crotch-first into a cute gril.
