As you can see, the first "serious" arc in the series ended up with an erased universe and a dead kaioshin, plus a new transformation, so they gotta be careful when writing it.

I like to think that Super is portrayed as an anime of "resting" for the Z-Fighters.

Sure, they still keep on training and facing new enemies, but at a way lower demand than before and almost no risk of death, allowing them to resolve character issues, developing them to the max.

Can SSG/SSB be sensed in the manga? Has anyone ever mentioned the whole "I can't sense his ki" thing about the forms in the manga?

Yeah, that makes no sense to me.

Becoming Super Saiyan Blue requires a higher threshold of power that can only be attained by becoming Super Saiyan God, thus negating the need to have five pure-blooded Saiyans on-hand whenever a fight's about to go down. It makes total sense to use SSB as an alternative and I thought it was a clever bit of writing back in Resurrection F.

But treating Super Saiyan God as a transition between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue makes no fucking sense. It's honestly my only real complaint with the Super manga.

Watch the Battle of Gods movie, followed by the Resurrection of F movie as both are canon. Then skip to episode 27 of Super, as the first 26 episodes are simply an extended recap of these movies and are boring, drawn out and with very poor quality animation.

Watch Super from episode 27 onwards. Don't bother with GT, as not only is it non-canon but it also takes place after the events of Super in the time line (though, since it's not canon and came before Super it contradicts the events of Super on numerous occasions). Well, the original idea was for the series to end after the Cell saga, with Gohan replacing Goku as the hero of earth.

Thing is that after Toriyama eventually decided to make the Buu saga he tried to make Gohan the 'new hero' but eventually decided that being Goku 2.0 wasn't right for Gohan as a character. In the end he decided that he wanted Gohan to be his own character.

You can almost tangibly see the conflict in Toriyama while he was writing the Buu saga, the whole thing seems to lead up to Gohan becoming the hero at the end, surpassing everyone and defeating Buu. However you can pretty much see the point that Toriyama decides that this doesn't fit for Gohan when they don't bother to include him in the final fight against Kid Buu (Gohan at that point should have been stronger than Kid Buu, so getting him to the Kai planet would have made sense, in fact since he was killed when Kid Buu destroyed the Earth they literally could have just gone and gotten him using the Supreme Kai's instantaneous movement ability and brought him to the Kai planet to fight Kid Buu). Gohan's omission from this final battle is pretty telling about the fact that at that point Toriyama had decided he wasn't the next Goku.
