I just finished rewatching Nichijou, and any scene involving Yukko was the best.

Scenes that focused on Hakase and Nano were unbearably boring and Hakase was just plain annoying. But when Nano joined Yukko's group, it became fun again. Strange, because I don't think I disliked Hakase this much when it was airing.

Funny enough I also finished a rewatch recently.

It reaffirmed my belief that the funniest scenes ended up being the ones without vocals. Not that the seiyuu didn't do fantastic jobs, but jokes like the Card House skit or the Monk attempting to hit Mai, only to see a bug on each shoulder - they were pure, unadulterated comedy. Timeless.

Yuuko really did have a great amount of funny scenes, but the fact that she was in so many scenes in general throws the ratio off a bit. Same with Mio.

Fair enough. The second trio - the one in the OP - did get an okay amount of focus in the second cour, though, considering the lack of secondary character focus in that part in general. The Sasahara scenes, for example.

That said, by the end, when the trio became a 4man squad with Nano, everything felt so much more heartwarming. Mio's rejection scene, and the "friends forever" voucher comes to mind.

Yukko is obviously best, true, but on a rewatch I found myself liking Hakase and Nano. Although the situations were often obviously bizarre, I like how realistic Hakase is in terms of being a kid. Loud, annoying, but occasionally adorable due to innocence.

My main problem is that she's spoiled, entitled, selfish, hypocritical, etc. I guess her appeal is her cuteness, but when her segments are the slower and less funny ones, her annoying qualities tended to outweigh her only redeeming quality.

In contrast, Mai is an asshole and literally the worst friend on the planet, but I found her segments enjoyable (though complemented by Yukko).
