The most irritating thing is that entire conflict was hit with a reset button. Confessions didn't change much, as characters interact in the same way as before. There is no progress in the harem plan, as Rito is still opposed to it and the love triangle from the original is still unresolved. Rito and Haruna finally realized that they love each other, but with Lala in the picture everything was put on hold. So basically we're at the same point as at the beginning of Darkness, just with a few girls more.
Next series would really need to focus on Rito and stray from the static ecchi accidents premise.

The thing that kinda annoys me is that while Rito and Haruna have a crush on each other, it grew tiresome that Rito never quite acknowledged on his own that plenty of girls give actual fucks about him. For instance, he sees that Run really cares about him and that Momo more or less is as involved in his day-to-day life as an actual wife would be, yet he stays focused singlemindedly on Haruna, as if he already exchanged vows of eternal faithfulness with her, even before he knew she kinda sorta liked him back.

Would have been nice to have more of his thoughts on this whole mess and see that he may actually fancy a future with someone else than "muh Haruna". Every single one of his suitors of a-grade girlfriend material.

Yeah, the relationships are so goddamn one-sided.

Like the incident with Risa - a classmate wants to have sex with him and he doesn't even have a single thought about it. Same with all other girls, even confessions barely managed to activate his brain cells.
He's also supposedly in love with Lala, but it's not noticeable at all. The gap between his behavior towards Haruna and Lala is tremendous.
And finally, he doesn't really give any thoughts about marrying Lala, becoming King of Space and having a harem. He just outright rejects that, without any internal conflict shown.

The series would be much more entertaining if we had some insight in Rito's inner workings, other than MUH HARUNA. Giving him some personality, drive and development would easily turn this series from just a fap material with some background noise into a 10/10 manga. I don't understand why nips so adamantly refuse to do something more fun and ambitious than sticking cowardly to the same overused formula.

I didn't even know I was reading the last volume. Suddenly the plot just progresses by leaps and bounds (as others have said, completely one-sided as Rito doesn't progress at all), epilogue-style flashes of all the characters start happening, and then it's just fucking done. I was really disappointed. It's not like I really expected a stellar story from the series, and I did enjoy it overall, but that "ending" just really left me unsatisfied.

What Darkness seemed to promise going in was a Harem End. And we didn't get it. Plus the comments they wrote at the end of the series made me wonder if we'd ever actually get a continuation.

etc. Plot advanced pretty far for such series, and many things changed from how they begun. And most of all, conflict with "Darkness" pretty much resolved, so continuing series under this title would be pointless. For now I'll wait a year or two for continuation under " ToLoveRu Harem" title or something. If he won't continue then yes, this is pretty shit ending for everything that was build up and left unresolved and it would be reasonable to hire some assassin.

Didn't really like how Darkness was more down-to-earth compared to TLR's more fantastical chapters. Maybe it's just me.

Anyway, I'll throw in my hat for To Love Ru Galaxy as well. Alongside having Rito developing as a character, some plot ideas I'd like to see:

>Arc where Rito accidentally uses one of Lala's inventions to turn all the guys around him into girls, with varying results
>Arc where Tearju redevelops the technology used to make Eve, and decides to make another clone with Rito as a base - Riko becomes a permanent character
>Rito and friends travel to Ren and Run's planet, which is basically Space Arabia, and discover how the women there get a harem of guys instead of the other way around

The biggest shame is that, earlier on, Rito actually did have a semblance of a personality. He was a lot more "Shonen protag" if you will. He was more daring and didn't mind confessing even from the beginning but as fate (editors) would have it, he needed to be more beta to lengthen the series.

He's had like pretty much 3 failed confessions or so. Guy should be pretty tired with it by now. Fate/editors just can't have him be successful.

His character in Darkness is somewhat worse mainly due to needing him to create more fanservice moments. I also like to believe that Yami's constant anti-ecchi beatings has led to him gaining some ingrained fear of tits and pussy.

I agree on the Haruna part though. I mean, sure he could be into her for a while but its not like she has done anything worth mentioning in keeping his flame alive, compared to the others at least.

Nonetheless, at the cost of Rito's character they have at least expanded on other characters. Yami and Momo obviously have had the best but others like Run, Nana, Haruna, Yui, and even Gid have been expounded upon.

I'd say the even Lala somehow has gotten better thanks to taking a backseat.

Its actually somewhat impressive for a mainly fanservice manga.

I want a 3rd installment with a time skip to when they're all in college or at least of age and the actual harem is established in effect so he's just trying to figuring out how to manage everyone rather than if there is going to be one. To be fair, I think that was the point as it was mainly about Yami and her accepting her more mundane life vs nemesis who wanted the old Golden Darkness WMD back.

I do say though that I'd love some sort of universal road trip with Alien waifus. Something like Space Dandy.

It'd probably be harder to use the whole cast for this though.

There was a lot of development when it comes to girls, but Rito? All confessions, declarations and rape attempts rolled off Rito like water off a duck's back. Except for one - Haruna's - which razed all those sprouting thoughts about harem near the end to the ground. When things seemed to actually progress, as Momo's and Neme's monumental efforts finally begun to show some tiny effects, the Harem Cartel got raided by MUH HARUNA Police. And at the same time Rito received a friendly reminder that he loves Lala as well, so Haruna confessing doesn't really change much from his perspective. Maybe aside from the fact that he has absolutely no reason to give up on Haruna now, but he wouldn't do that anyway. Therefore, we're back on the start line.

I think one change seems to be at least that Rito can now go "muh Haruna" with confidence as before it just seemed like he brushes stuff of due to either being a beta or having a fear of pussy. He also now has confirmation of Haruna being into him and actually has closure on his feelings for her now so he doesn't have to mully over that.

Second is that, hopefully, he at least acknowledges the problem and it looks to be that he's going to try to sort his shit out now instead of the ending of the first series where it's more like he's running away from the whole thing. At most, there's a choice to change, at the very least acknowledgement.

I wouldn't really say the status quo remains. Rito isn't in some sort of feelings limbo anymore. He now "has Sairenji" and knows she likes him back so winning the bowl is now that much harder as they would pretty much have to beat him (his own feelings). Even with that, there are now actual competitors who look to be actually trying to win.

I think Momo's development shows this the most. The Harem plan used to mean "compromise". No one can lose if no one wins. However, what kind of half-assed love is that? One should fight for one's feelings if one truly believed in them.

In the end, Darkness does give you that feeling, of Rito not really moving but Darkness was never really about Rito, Lala, or Haruna, who were the three main forces of the first series anyways. Darkness feels very much like a side story that develops side characters as the main character pops up but has to remain as static yet is important to the overall canon due to the character development. For a comparison, I'd say it's kind of like a Kingdom Hearts Spin-off where Sora isn't really developed but everyone else around him is.

it wasn't really to get him off the start line, but rather to redraw the race altogether. The winner isn't anymore the one who he runs to but rather the one who can catch him.

I dont mind that, TLR was very much just 1-2 chapters long small arcs and it was enjoyable that way, Darkness was the one with the long ass arcs.

Not everything have to be oh-so-serious ... it was fine, I enjoyed it more that Darkness, I guess that maybe why he wanted to make a stop since it really cannot sustain those type of Arcs, the next one would been the last.

He said at the end that he felt like the ecchi was getting stale. He had ramped up the "godlike falls" as much as he could without going full on penetration, so what more could he do? Seems like that was the big reason he wanted to give it space. And it makes sense, really, cause by the end Rito was diving into girls' panties left and right (to the point it was mundane).

Maybe next time around he'll take the plot and lewdness another step up, much like he did with Darkness.

He could have made an actual story. To love ru wasn't always meaningless ecchi. The original had plenty of real plots and even Darkness had the harem plan vs the brown girl for a while. The author got lazy and never bothered to make a new plotline after the conflict with brown loli was resolved.

It needs to progress to the next level. Like when TLR moved to a seinen magazine, TLRD needs to move to a full blown porn magazine.
