According to my research which consists of watching e-celebs on youtube it's all about the philosophy of Kadokawa (the publisher of the Light Novels). Their anime exist purely to advertise the LNs and nothing else. And KonoSuba's LN are selling like hot cakes, wtih only the novelized version of Kimi no na wa beating it in sales. The anime did its job, Kadokawa has no more need for more episodes. In fact, according to their business philosophy a third season could only harm their sales. They rely on getting you hooked enough to wonder what will happen next, revealing just enough to spark your attention but just little enough to keep you wanting more. In their eyes KonoSuba's anime isn't a tv show but an overglorified commercial.

I do not know but if you'd force me to guess I'd say cost-benefit.
Think about how much it makes to create a manga vs how much it gives you in profit. Now run those same numbers for an anime. An anime is expensive to make and only the most hardcore fans buy the Blu-Rays. A manga or LN is incredibly cheap and because they don't cost a lot the volumes will sell in much greater numbers. A spin-off manga as an easy cash grab works, an anime isn't an easy buck. Unless it's a kid's show with a toyline attached to it, but even then the anime itself is still just an advertisement.

A lot of the content it skipped was either no big loss or was better off skipped. Frankly, DEEN turned some lead into gold with some parts of this show so we'll never know for sure about this but people cry for the fucking rookie killer/party swap plot. Buuuut it's fucking irrelevant and it would be totally up to DEEN to polish it up to Konosuba anime comedy.

You have to cut something, all the time. A lot of things they cut were fine to leave out but then, I would rather have had some stuff they did adapt skimmed over as well. Like the lizard runner caravan stuff, which was the low point in the show imo and took up way more time than it warranted. I'd have like that time spent on more bantz and character interactions or maybe at least the final boss scene.

But who knows. They made pure joy where there was cursory stuff they just ran with. The things I really miss are things that the show didn't have time yet to get around to yet anyway.

As for the future of the show, there is no "confirmed" anything, just the usual memes about how anime is a commercial for LNs, etc. etc. ad infinitum. We have the same info now that we did when s2 ended: no current plans. Which is par for the course. We'll know nothing until they announce AND implement plans, or conclusively state that they will never make a new season. Which they never would, they will keep it hanging indefinitely.

The majority of Haruhi never got animated ffs even if you just stick to the LNs and go at the same pace as the show did. But they have never said "no more Haruhi" or even given solid info. They just stay silent all around, and let us dangle and make up theories.

I noticed this happens with a lot of anime that are based on visual novels. Typically, they get 2 seasons and then maybe a movie if it's popular enough, and then they're done. My guess is that in the long run they are typically less profitable than anime that are based on mangas, so this trend developed.
