I know this is a troll thread, and I am not usually the type to complain over all the pandering garbage because I know that's the market working properly for the Japanese otaku consumer base. Yet it really does seem like we've gone a good long while without any really interesting TV anime or breakthrough animus seven years into this decade. I mean there's been popular stuff to be sure, and some good adaptations of quality manga or LNs, but nothing paradigm shifting or particularly novel (inb4 someone mentions really indie stuff like something from Yamamura, while the indie and experimental scene is admittedly chugging along it doesn't fill the hole left by medium sized up and coming studios with fresh new ideas and funding to match).

This is probably going to sound like a load of shit, but I've been watching some early to mid 2000s anime & I have noticed something.

I feel like what sells now is a certain type of character. So you'll have autistic-chan, rich-chan, dumb-chan, etc; no male cast, and these characters personalities are set in stone. And since the anime is about selling THEIR merchandise, it's more focused on characters than anything else... BUT since these characters don't evolve or surprise you, neither does the anime & it becomes one dimensional schlock.

TO ME <---- & this is my opinion, early 2000s anime definitely whored out it's cute girls just the same, BUT it was more focused on selling you the world as well... AND it wasn't as afraid to focus on people outside the main cast (like male characters) to do so.

Hyakko is a good example of this. The first episode is devoted to not only introducing the characters, but also showing you how cool/big their school is. And yeah, you could argue that their are still plenty of HS comedy/SoL... which there are... it just feels different. I can't explain it.

Like if you look at a show like Minami-ke compared to Gabriel DropOut, Kana & Satania are both the Genki dumb girl archetype. Both shows are SoL/comedy anime... but I feel like Minami-ke spends time that wouldn't be spent today on showing Kana's humanity in a non-gag fashion. Like GD shows us Satania actually liking the dog, but ultimately that is a gag in itself; because what sells her body pillow is the fact that she is the dumb big-breasted demon girl, which is fine.

Minami-ke makes efforts throughout the series hinting that Kana isn't as stupid as she seems & that she is aware/cares about the feelings of those around her. It feels more real & not tagged on; which is part of the reason why I think Minami-ke could pull off their 1-2 dramatic episodes every season, because they spent the time making their characters human.
