I think this is an interesting question because at least on a surface level, Megumi seems like a poorly designed character (and why I hated her at first). Her most distinct character trait is that she has no distinct character traits at all. Nonetheless, despite being so ``poorly" designed, Megumi is probably the most popular girl.

I think the reason Megumi is so widely appealing is because she is the idealized real life female companion. While there is a certain appeal to the character archetypes of Utaha and Eriri, Megumi I think is what the majority of males truly want in female companionship. Tsunderes and Kuuderes are appealing in 2D, but not necessarily what somebody would actually want in real life. Megumi serves as the sympathetic voice who listens to all of the protagonist's struggles, is always available to ``help", regardless of how useful she actually is, and eventually even begins independently pursuing the protagonist's goals all the while remaining unwaveringly loyal to him. Since Saekano is likely somewhat representative of the author's own experiences with struggling to be a ``creator", Megumi embodies who the author feels/felt (depending on whether Megumi is based off of an actual person...personally I suspect not) he actually wanted the most in a partner. Not the classical 2D heroine archetypes, but simply somebody sympathetic and loving.
