Kino goes to all these different countries and each one has its own, unique system of government. She sees democracies, monarchies, technocracies, oligarchies, etc. and each and every one has some severe flaw that leaves their inhabitants fucking miserable.

Meanwhile, Kino, leaving free and open in the wild, has a better life than anyone she meets. I might just be looking too much into something that's not there.

There's definitely something though.

The author's a gun-loving Libertarian, so I doubt that. Also Kino's life kinda sucks in some regards. She has to watch tragedies unfold and she can't do anything to better any country she visits. She's murdered a bunch of people so she's conscious of all the blood she has on her hands. There's some countries that are bereft of strife and are thriving while others she (or other characters) visits that are tribalistic or backward in nature. She has all the time in the world and so much freedom and when she isn't driving to her next destination she's either bathing or napping. She isn't completely selfish, as she's helped people in the past solely on a whim but charitable acts tend to bite people in the ass (but have a silver lining to them after the fact).

Kino isn't really politically savvy either and doesn't really care, nor are the forms of government depicted supposed to be the main topic, but the people Kino and the other protagonists meets along the way.

Not true at all. Most of the time the inhabitants of each country are quite happy and pleased, even when their country is complete shit, for example the Ship Country. And then she comes across countries that are pretty much utopias too.

Honestly I think the amount of times she comes across a country where the inhabitants are not happy or pleased with their way of life is in the minority. Sometimes there's one or two people who are displeased, but it almost always turns out that they're in the vast minority.
The first book has a lot of what you're describing though, I suppose.

And like someone said earlier in the thread, for the two countries where they're slaughtering the tribal group, she doesn't recommend soccer or some other less stupid solution to their issue.

You have to take in mind that Kino was trained by Master and thus shares some of her values with her, but isn't as obvious an egregious murderhobo as her Master, who'd gladly rob two people looting an abandoned carriage, while Kino would prefer to not be bothered by them. That being said, I think the best way to describe Kino is being selfish, more than willing to take advantage of offers that benefit solely her but willing to help others as long as they don't end up clinging to her afterward, kinda lazy, a glutton without tastebuds, and asexual. She doesn't really care if people criticize her or chide her for being a wanderer or whatever, but she's pretty receptive to praise and takes pride in whatever it is she does, like cooking whenever someone makes the mistake of letting her cook.

That's the thing. Kino actually willingly partakes in the traditions of each country provided that she doesn't find it outright objectionable. Thats why she participated in the tournament. Plus, she works as a hired gun for her stay in certain countries provided that she gets supplies and commodities in return.

The point is that Kino makes it a point to never change or directly intervene in the affairs of a community provided that she doesn't get potentially screwed or forcefully dragged in. However, when her safety or well-being is a risk, or maybe if something just doesn't jive with her, she goes out of her way to be petty as fuck.

Like when she went rambo on everyone in that death marijuana tribe or when she pulled a fast one on those people in the land of divas.

I think somewhere down the road, Kino kinda stopped giving much of a shit about taking life. Probably around the 5th or 27th person or thing she murders. She still avoids resorting to murder, but it's not as much of a problem for her as it was around the beginning of the series.

Soo, has anyone gone through the LNs and think they are worth slogging through in English? I recall once looking it up and reading through some random stories but either the translation was irredeemably awful, or the original writing without accompanying visuals and sounds was on average kind of meh and the poor translation put a nail in the coffin.

I think you took away the wrong message from that episode. If I recall correctly kino even went to lengths to explain why she felt the way she did over killing the rabbit and it wasn't because she felt bad about killing it in and of itself. I think her reasoning was something along the lines of it having more to do with because she made the choice on another's behalf instead of her own behalf or something like that. I kind of enjoyed how she became a bit of a force of nature when her safety was threatened later on in the novels. Particularly the chapter where she's the bodyguard on the country that was a giant ship and the perspective was entirely from a person she was hunting.

Its important to remember that even in the parable-esque style, all the characters are portrayed very human.
