I honestly feel like on a whole Watanabe's overrated as a director. He uses music well and he can create memorable scenes, but overall he's kind of safe. Servicable, absolutely, but I dunno if I'd say exceptional.

To answer the question, Rie Matsumoto. I've only seen Kekkai Sensen, but it was really interesting and unique without feeling too "tryhard". Sort of like Yuasa, but without resorting to art/animation style to try to stand out.

That's true, it's not like he's free of any responsibility for it; it's just that people like to shit on it because the story was retarded, but the directing was fantastic, the animation was fantastic, the backgrounds were fantastic and the music was fantastic. If the writing was even passably entertaining it'd be at least a 7/10 to me.

the moment i started paying attention to directors was when i saw Kyousougiga, and Kekkai Sensen has proved to be the best direction i've seen since, so i'll say Matsumoto Rie. really, bones as a whole has a ton of works with fantastic direction.
Sakamichi was definitely well directed, but the source material was shit and Watanabe failed to be creative enough when adapting it. i didn't finish Space Dandy, but based on what i remember of it, Kekkai Sensen essentially took all the good aspects of it and improved on them.
